Hi we bought a chest/coffer off ebay,watched it and when it failed to sell made an offer which was accepted,it seems quite old,it has three large planks for a top,the remains of an old lock and the remains of a small compartment at one end,not sure it could be considered a bargain (paid just under £300 + carriage)but am uncertain of its age,any ideas?phil.

Just be looking around the Auctions and found this chest listed which is fairly similar to yours - it's listed as late 17th to early 18th century so I guess your's if from the same period.

Yep,those split spindles certainly look similar although ours seem to look if they may have been added later (one is loose and there is polish behind it),it seems to have been repaired/modernised quite a bit,the original hinges have broken and been replaced with butt hinges,the base must have given way and it has been repaired by nailing thick boards underneath the broken ones.The back is of the same construction as the front but plain (four panels) which still bear the chisel/adze marks and have never been polished,it is very heavy,thanks,phil.
