appologies for getting hold of the wrong end of the stick. It is good to know that there are people out there that feel so passionately about historic buildings on all counts reonovation, repair and conservation -

with regards to the Tilty Mill (purely a personal question) is it still able to be used as a working mill once again?

Suggest you look at Tilty Mill via google, and contact SPAB Mills Section.

And maybe SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) SAVE Britain's Heritage, Victorian Society, Georgian Group, c20th, Ancient Monuments Society, Friends of Friendless Churches, Historic Chapels Trust, Churches Conservation Trust, etc etc ... also Heritage Link...

Then there are all the smaller groups, such as SAVE Dreamland, Cinema Theatres Association... http://www.eh8.org.uk - there's a whole world out there campaigning to prevent 'renovation' and development for riches and demolition of our heritage beyond English Heritage...

Yes. The mill pond has been drained but only because the upper sluice gates were removed in the 1960s. If reinstated, and if the machinery was overhauled, it would be an easier candidate than many for return to work.

Other working mills keep going - and there are new ones being built.

Look at the range or organic flours and interest in home baking and breadmaking - there is a market.

Little Salkeld mill keeps on grinding.

Where it's not possible to return to full working (as at Boot, where H and S issues mean the flour can't be sold) then there is certainly interest re a working museum.

There's a very modern mill been built near us - Gilchester Organics, powered by a wind turbine.

I need to vist - I think the turbine isn't direct as with the mill in the pic, I think it powers an elecric set up - but real stoneground flour is hard to beat.

Many are taking up baking including several blokes I know. Greed I think, and a love of decent bread.

I have to admit that every time I watch Trumpton, I am envious of Windy.

Mind you, I think I would prefer a water mill!

We seem not to ever manage that... but I'm rich in that there is always something to plan, it can only get better not worse, in the evenings when we light the stove and have dim lighting it doesn't look too shabby, when I look out of the window I see trees and birds, amongst the weeds, we are on the edge of a WHS... even if there is a Gd II* and a Gd I Bar in the vicinity, we at least are hopefully doing our bit.

But the placcy windows are gradually taking over everywhere, I have no doubt when eventually we leave our last bastion of decent joinery will end up in a skip.

More time and effort saving our own and less time spent trying to save other buildings might of course bring those riches, but maybe I'll get my rewards in the hereafter. I may at least be warm without having to wear a fleece all the time.

Many of the local bakeries use 'Mill Green' for their wholemeal loaves, and very nice it is too.
The museum also sells flour to anyone who wants to bake their own bread at home.

2. when the owner (a millwright) gets round to it.

Some of the machinery has been salvaged from Suffolk mills that collapsed or were demolished in the 60s, but essentially it's a new mill.

BTW, I can see why you'd be envious of Windy, as the last epsiode we watched saw him take in a large batch of apples so they can be turned into "apple juice". A likely story.

I think Windy largely featured in Camberwick Green.

What's the issue that many here have with people turning long since derelict mills into homes? Always been curious.

Because they remove all the working parts to make room for their furniture and won't settle for basic agricultural-standard suface finishes, so the end result loses all its essential millness.
