Some say they aren't what they used to be, though I think the range of colours is unsurpassed, and the way the colours change according to light conditions is fabulous. Their eco eggshell is hugely disappointing though, I'm finding woodwork needs numerous thin coats - I'm on the fourth coat of a radiator I'm doing, and I think it needs 5. :shock: However, water based eco eggshell is not F & B's fault and although I haven't fully researched it yet I think everyone's going that way. I find the paint needs thinning down regularly, it goes thick if you're using over a few weeks.
The paper's got that sumptuous "can I touch you" quality.

I used a water based eggshell recently in my son's room (not F&B). I looks OK but has nothing like the silky feel of an oil based eggshell.

I quite agree. I think this new eco paint is diabolical for period properties. My father mixed pigment and oil as a boy- I may have to get him to show me how. I have not had success in matching commercially available linseed oil to my colour schemes.

It is possible to make one's own paints. Artists often do, house painters almost never. AP Fitzpatrick in Bethnal Green http://www.apfitzpatrick.co.uk/home.htm stocks pigments and all the associated gear. That's where I bought the pigments for my home-made coloured distemper which I used on my drawing room cornice. Ive not tried making an oil based paint, but it cant be hard in principle.
There is a serious impediment to making really authentic paint - the banning of the use of lead oxide. I believe that some restoreres of Grade 1 properties are still allowed to do so, but not us (especially if we are not MIPs).

I walk down Saville Row quite often, not least to ogle the wonderful tailoring on display in the shop windows, and on my occasional visits to buy a new suit (off the peg at Gieves & Hawkes at the other end - not quite the real thing; I have only made one visit to Huntsman, the grandest establishment on the Row, where my wife bought me a ready made tweed jacket in their sale. It is exquisitly made, and was suprisingly good value. The staff were charming, as one would expect in a proper gents' outfitters, but I digress..)
The new building is slick and not unpleasant on the eye - typical of a lot of buildings of its kind going up in London at the moment. The old building had quite a different feel; brooding, fortress-like, and it sat a little uncomfortably in the streetscape - a kind of built equivalent of Gordon Brown. More appropriate for a police station or some anonymous government agency about which one cant talk. Not the kind of building which would pull in a high rent from a hedge fund or fashion house. That's not to say I approve of it being pulled down, but I can see why it was.

G. Gainsborough old hall,mucked around with over the centuries(there are even railway rails used as beams!)but has a most wonderful feel to the place,if you have not visited you should,phil.
