On the north side of the main road stands the Vernon Arms, an old coaching Inn built in 1671 and bearing the Vernon Crest above the entrance

One of my ancestors has a memorial in Westminster Abbey - hails though from Lincs I think.

Well, I'm sorry, but all these hints at the nobility of the Vernon bloodline don't wash with me.

Here'sa much more plausible link for the name.

Yup - although I think they also called a whole heap of other places in the US after him also so it would be interesting to trace exactly why his ancestors felt they had to flee the country.

A suburb and former estate located in E Glasgow, with Baillieston to its east and Shettleston to the west, Mount Vernon was originally named Windy Edge because of its postion on a high and commanding ridge. It was purchased by Glasgow tobacco merchant, George Buchanan, in 1758 and renamed Mount Vernon after his neighbouring estate in Virginia, owned by George Washington. A century later (1860- 1878) more villas were built and a suburban rail line established. By the 1930's these house were engulfed with newer housing, the predominate feature in Mount Vernon.
