Actually, it's not something I've so far delved into deeply, too busy boring for England on the history of cold storage at the moment - but I got interested following a visit here:

Although long gone, the house had its own gas plant, and at night the boathouse and jetty used to be lit up by gas. The whole place has a fascinating history.

However, as with places like Tyntesfield, and your home, I suspect thay had someone to look after the plant for them.

I have tried our LOCAL joinery firm and they were not apparently clued up about wooden wondows.

I have spoken to numerous people about wooden windows. But it seems to be a complicated matter.

I bet somewhere there is a firm that makes up wooden windows day in and day out at very reasonable prices. Its just a matter of finding them.

Do you just want someone to make the windows or to supply wood and make or to supply wood, make and fit?

I might know someone who might make them if you supplied wood and fitted yourself.

I know Biff but I cannot afford a tradesman of his calibre and he only works in oak.

I'm planning on getting Biff up here to look at our windows and then bricking him into the workshop until they're all done. Or perhaps I might try bribery. Anybody got anything on him that they'd care to share?

It's worrying, isn't it, that a local joinery firm isn't clued up about wooden windows?

I have to say that the local one to us which can and does make excellent wooden windows has now gone over to uPVC also - as otherwise they would simply not get the trade any more.

I sympathise though. When my mother had an attempted burglary which damaged a wooden window trying to get a joiner to come and even look at it let alone fix it was hard work.

Well apparently his real name isn't Biff. I.e. he wasn't christened Biff. Rumour has it that he is actually the disgraced Lord Bifford of Biffingham, who lost his family seat after a nasty incident with an actress and a Torquay beach donkey named Trigger.

There are loads of them. Most joinery companies do it.

Actually, Vernon, who came from Vernon in Normandy, was a mate of William the Conqueror. He was given Surrey, for services rendered. I think I still own Surrey - just a few details to sort out.
