Looks fantastic Jon - and has given me some ideas....

Excellent, a stirring of the grey porridge is what is required.

Yeah beautiful of course, but you're going to get very dripped on when fetching wood in the rain. Now if it had been a bit higher and a bit wider it would have been the neighbours who got the drips.

Lot of effort and a few quids worth of oak in that I bet, very pretty though.

From one chippy to another, I think I would have set the roof out differently, two inch tile over hang is plenty, can't see how you managed to get the eaves course to stay in position when you were tiling because of the overhang on the tilt, not that it matters on a log store, but won't the water run between the tiles of the eaves course because you have'nt got a double lap.

The overhang is enough to stand under and remain fairly dry, but certainly will be drier than in the middle of a yard pulling out from under a weighted down sheet :lol:

Just held the eaves course until two more courses were placed on to to weigh down. Water has the potential to run between the overhanging first course but that is well past any timber structure being underneath it so if it does it just falls to the floor. Although stood underneath it in the rain last night smoking the water that ran through that gap simply tracked down the underside of the tile and dropped off at the underside of the lowest point instead of the top of it so however you look at it it is not an issue.

More concerned with limiting water ingress at the top as I don't want to touch the stonework.

That's my type of plan as well. Thinking can be done in all weathers, in all situations - just think about all the benefits of thinking about doing things rather than actually doing them:-

- It's free (unless as in my case you tend to buy certain materials whilst planning)

- You can do it anywhere, not just at the site itself - in the bath, in bed, in meetings at work, on the bus......

- You don't annoy SWMBO with the mess

- Your back and knees don't ache in the morning

- You don't need permission from anyone, partner or council

- The end result always looks great, and it not limited by your skills or tools (or excuses!)

- Health & Safety concerns are eliminated

- You don't annoy the neighbours

- Zero environmental impact

And I'm sure there are many, many more. All in all, actually doing things sounds over-rated to me.

It's stopped raining! ...Oh no it hasn't...oh yes it has... etc, etc. Makes working outside unpleasant and too precarious to carry the oak doorframes inside and fit them...

Well when we have logs delivered we get them on a dry day as they have to be barrowed through the building after being tipped in the road, at least now they dont have to be carried down the external cellar stairs but just stacked in the store so it will save a lot of effort.


The large blue font is supposed to simulate a beautiful blue sky on the day we obtain the logs
