New wood store, what do you think, tucked into an alley at the East end of the building and not easy to get a good picture. Tiled it today but ran out of light for a piccy.View attachment 2View attachment 1

It has 3 components, Oak, clay tile, and copper nail for the battens.

looks quite tight to get stacking logs in there , but looks like a good job all the same. what will you be tiling it with?

Its deceiving, the structure is 1metre deep, with the roof overhanging another 400mm tiled. The gap it sits in is almost 2 metres wide.

Clay peg tiles on the roof salvaged from the roof of the main house, all hung on new split from offcuts oak pegs.

Tiled today with a few finishing touches should be finished by 10 am tomorrow.

In fact we should get over 6 cubic metres of logs inside it.

clay tiles should look really good on there , a nice contrast against the stone wall.
is it necessary to provide air flow around the back to stop the wall from getting damp with all those logs in there?

Its not fixed to the wall and has a gap between the wall and it. I have not sealed the tiles against the wall either as it is on the east elevation I will see if it has no significant water ingress there and that should help air flow too.

Looks very good. I would have omitted the solid end, though, to allow more air circulation. Or, if it's required to help keep the stacked logs in place, perhaps leave a 2-inch or so gap between the planking?

I was going to ask about how you sealed the tiles against the house but I agree that it may not be necessary for a wood store, unless the prevailing wind drives a lot of rain onto that wall.

I thought it was unlikely to get much driving rain from the east, but it will be monitored this winter whilst empty too see.

That eastern gable has a regular wind tunnel effect through the passageway so as ends were needed for log retention I have speculated that gaps were not required, although later modifications may ensue.

Why, Thankyou very much, hopeful to get some finished pictures up tomorrow.

Already carried this winters firewood into the cellar, so this winter it will probably be a junk store and smoking shelter!!

It is a free standing object with no foundation not attached to the building so no, it is also tucked away around the back so should not cause any issues.

Um, it's an enclosure within the curtilage of a listed building, so it does need planning permission.
(It had crossed my mind to ask, but now the question's out in the open I have to give the honest answer, sorry :? )

So what is the definition of an enclosure in this instance? This has no back, just two ends and a roof does that make a difference?

Also we took down a lean to in this area so in planning terms it has been replaced with something smaller does that make a difference?

It is intended to store firewood and no one can see it , apart from on this forum

Yes, Planning Permission, not LBC, as it doesn't touch the listed building but falls within what would normally be "permitted development" where the rules for listed buildings are much stricter. Interestingly (but typically), "enclosure" doesn't seem to be defined in the Statutory Instrument (going on what's available on the net, rather than my understandably huge work library). But I really, really would give the local planners a suitably contrite phone call tomorrow morning before finishing the tiling...

Edit) I assume you had permission to take down the lean-to, so they know it was there? which should (if there's any justice) count in your favour

That's a greyer area as I suspect it's much more obviously just resting there by virtue of its weight. (and indeed, a greyer shed)

But the wood store which has no floor, rear wall, or front wall is certainly free standing (although has been designed to make use of the shelter of an adjacent wall ) So the shed is apparently far more of an enclosure than this.

I have got to speak to the LA shortly so will ask their opinion.

Last time they wanted PP from me I applied for LBC and got them told them the building was built as a residential property and I would return it to that from a BAR, I refused to apply for PP and in the end they wrote me a letter saying that they wanted the building saved and "were unlikely to take enforcement action".

isnt there new laws about building extensions and such things and that you dont need PP any more so long as they meet certain requirements? or is this a different thing altogether?

In the curtilige of a listed building those rules change, permitted development rights do not count for listed building owners.

In my case it would appear planning should be required, we did demolish an ugly inappropriate lean to much larger in this area which somewhere I have pictures of plus it is shown on the original survey plans so shouldn't be a serious problem for us. The structure is sympathetic in both construction and appearance besides which we need somewhere to store our firewood !
