The image shows the current amount of ice (the purple bit!) A record loss this year.

Isn't that a contradiction in terms? Surely something is either in equilibrium or it's dynamic.NT said:Variations are normal for dynamic equilibria

Phew - just in time!biffvernon said:Penners, don't concede too quickly. When the ice cube in your whisky has all melted you know that it will only get warmer if you do nothing. Time to drink up.
Oh but they absolutely are. It's the same unusual path of the jet stream and air masses that allowed warm air from the western Pacific to move northwards, warming the Arctic and displacing cold Arctic air southwards on our side of the globe. Notice from the Picture that the ice is intact our side of the Arctic and we've been having nights that have been relatively cool this summer. The jet stream allowed depressions that at this time of year usually pass across Scotland and further north, to cross southern Britain., getting the soil nice and wet. Then when a pulse of hot humid air from the Med pushed over up and over the cold arctic air, whoosh, nemesis for the Talbot Inn.tom.harrigan said:Are you saying that the ice conditions at the north pole and the flood conditions at the Talbot Inn are related?
