Our row of houses (built in the 20s) replaced a rather charming (but no doubt unsalubrious) row of 18th Century weavers cottages called ------ Bottom, because (presumably they were at the bottom of the lane). The new road built in the 20s ran from further down the hill, so (and I'm sure nothing to do with sparing the blushes of the modern indoor bathroom and electric lit family) was renamed the much more tasteful ------ Mount.

and another was called Gates House because of the big wrought iron gates at the front, which were removed from Houghton House (Bunyan's 'House Beautiful,' Pilgrims Progress) in the 17th century.

Those were certainly some very stylish gates!
Went to Houghton House earlier this year. A house that lost its worth completely when they sold off the land - so they asset-stripped it. Very sad - and an amazing location perched high on an outcrop giving a grandstand view of the hunting below.

Ours is Church Bank - so called because it is on a bank next to the church. We've been told that the bank on which our cottages sit was known as Stone Bank before a road improvement scheme some time in the 20s removed the stone profile. As the church is Victorian and we are C17 it's an irony that the house is now named after the church.

(As an aside, we have a friend who has a (currently un-named) farmhouse at the end of Knob Lane and is desperate for SWMBO to go on holiday without him so he can put up a sign and call it Knob End (honestly, some people never grow up do they) :roll:

I know of a recent development where the developers called it Cherry Bank after the bank of flowering cherry trees, First thing the bulldozers did was remove the bank, complete with cherry trees. Developers then planted a birch tree in each garden... :?

Funnily enough a man called round yesterday from the power suppliers enquiring as to who owned the willow tree as they want to chop it down because its close to a power line! (The general reaction was chopping down the power line was a far preferable option!)

They'll probably be able to, even if it has a TPO on it and belongs to someone other than them. Being a "service provider" opens all sorts of loopholes.
