why is your house called what it is called?

Our house was built around 1590 ish so I have absolutely no idea why it's called Tudor Cottage. A very boring name but it would be too much faff to change now.

Well, Elizabeth (our greatest ever monarch and I take no alternative view on the subject) would have still been on the throne then.

Actually, Ard is a gaelic word for a high place or point and in English an "ard" was an early form of plough, either would have been appropriate when the name Ard was chosen for our place.

Much less intelligent, but that does remind me of the very, very old joke about Ardvarks being harmless, as we all know that Ardvark never hurt anyone.......

The house-before-that was called The Beeches. There were (are) two huge copper beeches in the front garden and one in the back garden, possibly planted not long after the house was built.

Like Family Wiggs, our house is a 'Ty' but we are 'Ty Mawr' which means big house (they didn't go in for fancy descriptions in Wales). It's clear if you see it that this is a gross exaggeration - delusions of grandeur, I think.

A house down the road from my parents was named 31. I seem to remember that the owners husband served 31 years in the police. When the houses in the road were numbered, it became No 18, causing no end of confusion!

Our cottage is called The Cottage because, prior to the start of the postal service when letter writers needed a more detailed address, it was just know as the cottage down the lane. Even in the Deeds from 1760 it is referred to as the cottage situate at the north end of Egmoor. Apparently The Cottage is one of the most common names for a cottage which is really boring, but you can't change the name of a place that has been called something for years. Tell that to the people in the village who re-named The Laurels (Victorian villa) to Peperharrow (where they used to live before they moved here). Why do people do that? If they liked it so much where they used to live why didn't they stay there! Rant, rant.

Our house in the Holy land was called Pelegrin House, apparently meaning travelling Pilgrims.
Another one was called Brandreth House after the person who built it, and another was called Gates House because of the big wrought iron gates at the front, which were removed from Houghton House (Bunyan's 'House Beautiful,' Pilgrims Progress) in the 17th century.
Now we are just plain old 28.

Our's is Tithe Farm. Built mid 18th century almost certainly on site of previous farmhouse.

Any offers as to the name's origin?

There are a number of Tithe Farm's in England. I thought this was due to an agreement whereby, at the time of the enclosures, the Church was given an allocation of land in lieu of payment of tithes, the income from the farm being used to support the parish. (Not to be confused with the Glebe lands or Glebe Farm which helped support the Parish Priest or Minister).

An alternative might be that it was simply a tenth part of an estate when farms became fixed in area after the enclosures.
