I'll have a go at some photography, though it will have to be via my 'phone (daughter has "borrowed" my camera), and even then it will be dependent on my ability to post the results on the forum, which I've never attempted before.


ps A thought: if you were to be laid low with some sort of lurgy or sprain (use your imagination), Chris would have to inhabit the kitchen making nourishing brews for you, and iron rations for himself. That might go some way to convincing him.

Thanks Moo. If the pic sharing doesn't work out don't worry. There's a button on the photobucket site to get a phone code, which is a number you text the photos to on your phone - the next time you look at the Photobucket site they are magically there after you've sent that text. But you'll need a Photobucket account to begin with.

Then, once the images are on Photobucket you click "copy image code"'under the photo and paste it here.

I'm sure there are other ways to do it too, but that seems pretty easy for a Luddite like myself.

There's no way Chris would make me anything if I were ill! :lol:

I have my son's old and battered iPhone, which has loaded the pictures straight into my computer's in-built photo library (iPhoto), so I'll see whether I can use the Photobucket method to get them on to the forum.
If it doesn't work, I'll e-mail them to you.

I attempted to liberate some rock salt from the pile at the end of my drive yesterday - bit was thwarted by the fact it had frozen rock solid and was resistant even to blows with the spade.

Could that perhaps explain the term... rock salt?

Things are starting to freeze in the house, in the bathroom and kitchen. If it weren't for the chickies I'd go somewhere else.

Not sure what the temperature got down to here last night, but if anyone has any tips on defrosting car doors I'd be grateful - after fifteen minutes mucking about with warm water, de-icer, etc, I managed to unlock the door this morning but the lock mechanism itself was still frozen solid and while the handle would move, the door wouldn't open.
I'm a bit ashamed to say I ended up abandoning the attempt and got a taxi.

Not terribly helpful now, but I had a Peugeot 405 a few years ago that was a devil for the doors icing up. Plenty of WD40 in the lock mechanism and putting silicone spray on a rag and wiping it round the door seals before the frozen weather always helped a lot.

A couple of times where the drivers door got completely stuck, I was able to get the boot open and put an electric fan heater inside the car - half an hour of that running and it had warmed everything up enough to get the doors open.

Warm water to defrost round doors is a bad idea, as of course it introduces more water which then freezes the following night. If it is the door seals that are freezing shut to the door, if you can get it open then do try silicone spray - it's good stuff for any kind of rubber seal.

Warm the business end of the key (but not with water, which risks re-freezing) before you put it into the lock - wait a few moments then try turning it. But be careful - if your key head is also an electronic "plip", don't get it too hot. I usually use a match flame, applied briefly to the tip.

Garages are for tools, machinery, odds and ends of wood, old carburettors, several pieces of odd-shaped steel that will come in handy one day, bits of plasterboard that the council tip won't accept, dozens of boxes of screws (every size except the one you need), random plumbing and electrical fittings, that plastic clip that you know fell out of the car, but you can't discover from where, the broken garden chair that you promised to mend in 2003...

...plus (most important of all), an old armchair, a kettle, a radio and an ancient woodburning stove.

Plus old radiators, a stepladder, various pieces of old rope, an old looking scabbard, a broken Swingball, the old fridge (x2), some tents, a hammock, spare slates, an old oak beam, a bit of a plough, a box from three houses ago we've not opened, at least two dozen electrical screwdrivers (where else could they be?), various bits of old engines, lengths of copper pipe, and a rabbit hutch (we've never owned a rabbit!).

I just wish I also had space for a car or the lawnmowers! :roll:
