We have just had a wood pellet heating system installed - it's only been running for a couple of days so far, but feedback so far is:
It cost approx #6,000 including installation. This includes a 1,000 litre thermal store - like a super insulated hot water tank, which means that the boiler can tick over on a low setting rather than keep switching on and off. Grants are available though - we should be getting 25% of that cost back straight away.
It burns wood pellets, that look a bit like cattle feed. They are fed automatically from a bin. It can also burn logs, although they have to be fed manually. I suspect that the pellets originate overseas, but we have heard that more local sources will soon be available. Pellets are bought by the tonne, and are cheaper in bulk.
The boiler itself is quite large - about a metre wide, with the bin a similar size, and assorted pipework at the back. We were lucky to have a garage at the back which houses it nicely - it certainly won't tuck away in the living room. The thermal store is a bit of a monster; imagine a hot water tank crossed with a cruise missile. We have quite a large house to heat though, and I think that smaller versions are available. Putting it in the garage also solved the problem of adding a flue to a listed building. (The CO is happy)
There is a low hum when the boiler is switched on, which is another reason not to fit one in the living room.
It's too soon to know how much money is being saved, but it has replaced a series of elderly electric storage heaters, so it must be more economical, as well as greener.
At the moment we are quite pleased with it - there is no mains gas in the village, and our last house used oil. I don't think we would have had it fitted if there was already a working system in place though.
