It's not a core plug. Too big, would need to be malleable iron, shape is wrong and edges wouldn't seal well, and if it were a used one the only way to remove them is to poke a screwdriver through and prize it out so there would be a hole in the middle.

My guess would be a candle holder, though you are on the boundary of a church which might well have replaced an earlier church. How about iron age grave goods - did you find any skeletons beside it? On a more sensible note how deep in the ground was it?

The save time tool's patent application number does not show up on a patent number search, neither does the "regd no". My guess would be some kind of de-burring tool for cleaning up pipe ends after cutting. Go on Doug, buy it, you know you want to!

Zebra's device could well be a candle holder for one of those big church candles: normally the candle would be pushed down onto a spike in the middle and the 'tray' would be big enough to catch most of the drips... Any trace of a spike in the middle?

I remember many years ago at a pub in wilmslow being shown a pile of small cast iron dishes,I asked what they were and was told they were spitoons!,(must have had accurate customers!).

The pub had a brass footrail at the bar which was supported on cast iron brackets each of which had a hole that these dishes fitted into,far too low to be ashtrays,Seemed strange as it was quite a smart pub but I suppose it may once have been a "spit and sawdust"establishment.

Our pub had them but when the landlord took them away I told him I missed those spittoons since they were gone. He replied that I used to miss them when they were there... :shock: :shock:

Don't tempt me Keith. I could quite easily buy it but I've just used up my allowance buying a copy of 'Honey Identification'.

Giraffe says he has some acid I could use to clean it up. Yes I have found an awful lot of bones while digging about. I have been assuming that they were animal rather than human but I might be wrong. I've reburied them just in case, so I don't get ghosts.
The church is behind the house and the garden in front, so the garden is unlikely to have been part of the church yard for some 300 years or so, since the house has been there.
I'm told that the house used to be the farrier's if that is any further clue.

Those are definitely the bones of a velociraptor. St Albans was known to be a centre of global velociraptor population, before they were wiped out by the meteorite.

Or you've found the midden of someone who enjoyed a joint of lamb.
