Sorry Me! I forgot about giving the answer to that Whatsit... 
They are made from lignum vitae and were used for forming the ends of lead pipes prior to having unions or fittings soldered into them. The straight pieces or mandrils are tapped into the pipe ends to round them and the cones are then gently hit onto the pipe to close the ends in so that the fitting fits snugly ready for soldering.
This is a page from a 1950's Monument Shetack Tool Catalogue showing the range available and their prices. I've been looking for a set for years and bought these from a dealer and, like buses, another 2 sets came up for sale in different places shortly after so I bought them as well... :roll:
I didn't get a new measuring tape from Santa Penners despite asking for one. I've got used, when measuring something only a few inches long by opening the tape to about 24" where there is very little wear and the divisions are legible...

That Monument catalogue is a bit of reality check for me! You say it's "1950s", so it was published when I was between 8 and 18 years old - yet it looks like something out of museum!

Fraid it's worse than that chaps, any use of the word "published" in regard to a catalogue is very last century. The word now is "uploaded", sorry.

I do know that Doug needs to pause on spending money on old widgets for a moment and buy himself a new tape measure!
Mind you, I bet that it's always the nice new tape measures that disappear, and the one that's so worn you need to pull it out and ignore the first 3' every time you use it that never disappears......
