Indeed but it takes a moment to realise that moving the router further away from the laptop can change the angle and mean the signal travels further but in a line which puts a smaller thickness of bricks in the way so the result is a stronger signal.

No matter where he located his router, he found it impossible to get a signal. Something to do with a lack of electricity, I gather.

The logical conclusion is that they must have leap-frogged these earlier technologies in favour of wireless technologies.

Can't remember if I said this (it's my age, you know), but run a Cat 5 cable to the other end of the house (in the attic, or wherever cables will go), connect one end to a spare port on the router, and the other end to a standalone WiFi box. I did that, and now have WiFi throughout the house, garden, workshop and cart lodge.
