I have to admit to loving Ebay for my own home as i find i can usually get items cheaper on ebay than even trade prices on some items i buy.
One of my bargains was a french painted mahogany cabinet that i managed to get at a snip of £500 fromt he importer direct. when everywhere else was over £1400 and even trade i could only manage at £735.
It can be a great place to buy but also frustrating at times.
Your room is looking wonderful and well done on the wallpaper hanging. Not so scary once you get into it is it?

Looks lovely Pford! Fantastic work all round. I agree the chairs will be a thousand times nicer with a rich, dark fabric - something with much more weight to it.

Thank you all for your gracious comments. Mrs F is warming to the chairs now (the design...we both agree that they need re-upholstering). The table has some noticeable scratches to the top in a few places. We are torn between leaving them alone and having the table french polished. I wouldn't consider this on a more expensive table, but at this price it could transform the piece. Has anyone here ever had something repolished? Did it completely destroy the patina? Is it able to remove major scratches?
The table survived the party - it was christened with a large chocolate fountain...although a tablecloth took the worst of the choccy splashes
Wall light arrived from Jim Lawrence today...will post photo when I have chance to fit. Ceiling lights coming from Norwich Lighting Centre but taking ages...another few weeks.

I'm looking forward to seeing your lighting! Judging just from the photo, the table looks fine to me. I'd be inclined to spend on crisp white linen rather than re French polishing, which I think could cost you as much as you paid for that table.
I've had stuff re French polished and it's amazing. I'm sure all fine scratches would be removed, and if you completely refinish a table, major scratches can be removed.
As for the whole patina question - I think it depends on what you think of as patina. A badly scratched table that is designed to be French polished is not desirable in my opinion, but the blackened dents and dings on an old oak coffer definitely are.

Curtains finally arrived yesterday, although there was a stain on one of the pelmets (so they are going to recover and replace). Need to let them hang for a few days and then will post photos. I was planning to get the lights up this weekend, but I'm off to NY now...so maybe in a couple of weeks. Wanting to go and get some tablecloths/napkins/place settings, but will wait until we have the chairs reupholstered

NY would be very interesting for tableware shopping. The shopping in general seems so much better over there. And they have proper chicken medicine available over the counter too, it's just not fair.
So many bits and pieces for a room, it all takes absolutely ages. At this rate we may be finishing your dining room and my hallway at the same time.

I know...feels like i've spent my time at home slaving in the garden as well. Spent today digging out several elderly roses with my mattock...my back aches now - think I deserve a beer.
Sadly Joce there will be no time for shopping...just a few days inside the office :x but I agree with you on the US shopping scene. We regularly purchase from US websites and then use www.myus.com to ship stuff back

No so far, although a colleague at work did get asked to pay duty on a PC he imported. I've only ordered small bits through MYUS and have had family members ship the larger items as 'gifts'.
Even with duty, a considerable saving can be made on some things. I'm a fan of www.frontgate.com

So, here are some photos of the curtains. No great pictures as I have not yet fitted the light (so it's a bit dark) and the curtains have to hang in their pleats for a couple of days...but you get the idea. Still one pelmet to go and now we can begin the discussions on upholstery fabric (Mrs F and I disagree somewhat at present :wink: ) Will share some better pics when the curtains are open and I have a working light.
