I called my sister who has recently had one fitted (well about 4 months ago now) and had a similar problem i mentioned it to her as it suddenly occurred to me so though i would be nosey!!... they have a victorian detach and didnt want the tiles altering in her dining room apparently what they did was put a decorative wood bead around the inset hearth and left it at that. so far so good !
so could be an alternative i guess .

Not a bad answer in my opinion. Of course I wouldn't suggest using a removable decorative bead/surround, because that would be breaking the rules.

A large gin does not produce a job that's better. It just looks better (until the gin wears off).

Some progress on the dining room.....

Spent today in the cellar (definately not a vaulted undercroft) insulating under the floor. Horrible, horrible job....my arms and back ache
Have finished most of it - used a mixture of kingspan and glass fibre (basically whatever was cheap at Diss auction rooms) and then foil back plasterboard. A 12.5mm 8x4 sheet is rather heavy - should have cut them down first in retrospect.

Anyway, have got some furniture in place. The Grange sideboard and the glazed bookcase were both ebay bargains....less than 500 quid for both of them!! Got the table today at Diss auction - just over £300....it's not perfect and was sooooo tempted by an eye-wateringly expensive walnut table elsewhere...but decided to make do and us the spare funds to make a start on the morning room. The chairs were also from the auction...10 chairs for just over 200 quid. Mrs F is not keen....agree that the fabric is awful, but planning to have them re-upholstered. Thoughts on the chairs? I quite like them....but I'm a grown man and can take criticism :wink:

Well done! That is what I call good budget keeping, excellent recycling, and good fun, to boot.

The chairs will be easy to reupholster, you could go to Alldis in Fakenham, they have some super fabrics at good prices and you could probably re-do the seats yourself. They look quite well stuffed.

From the condition of the fabric, it looks as though they have been re-upholstered (and stuffed) very recently. Just a shame that someone chose that fabric.

There is a local upholstery place in Attleborough which only charges £9.25/chair....given that I know my limits on these things, that seems like a worthwhile investment (esp. since the chairs were so cheap).

The table will have it's first outing today...for an 8 year old's birthday party :?

Blimey, we need a TW Gaze bidding alert system on this forum, you will never know how close I came to bidding against you on that table and chairs!
I actually finally decided not to bid because I found the backs of the chairs a bit uncomfortable, but then I have got bad backache at the moment.

The fabric looked so new to me, that I actually wondered if there was some old stuff still underneath? Have you thought of checking?
