Andrew, can you point me in the direction of an insulating jacket, please? Is this a specially made item for flues? Or do you mean wrap it with insulating material and cable tie it on? Thanks.

Insulating Chimney Liner Installations
There are many differing opinions regarding the use of insulation with chimney liner installations. Some insist on it, others insist on not using it.
In our experience, the majority of installations do not need additional insulation. The air between the liner the the stack warms and act as insulation itself.

We recommend only using additional insulation where the stack is either very high, very large or external in an extremely exposed position.

Liner insulation jackets are used as an alternative to Micafil for insulating multi fuel liners. They are manufactured from non combustible Rockwool and are sold in 1 metre lengths. The insulation thickness is 30mm and joints and seams need to be sealed using 75mm wide aluminium foil tape.

Liner insulation jackets are particularly suited for use in large stacks where the volume of Micafil required would be prohibitive.

Jaqy - can you describe your flue?

Is it straight and wide all the way to the top, or does it bend and get smaller?

I know it's beautiful up your way. We have nothing like it here. I used to live on the edge of Dale Dyke resevoir, at Bradfield Dale, and the scenery was breathtaking.

Anyway, here's a pic of the fireplace and wall, showing the approximate route of the chimney

And here's picture of inside the chimney

The width os the fireplace is 7' and at the top of the chimney it is approximately narrowed to about 2'. The depth of the cimney from is 20" at the start, narrowing to about 12". The overall height of the chimney is around 17' from the top of the brick fireback.

That's a very nice fireplace Jaqy - and the new head looks good. Incidentally, can I ask how much it cost? I've just had a new one made (looks to be about 60% the width of yours, rougher stone, but very similar).

We paid £4,000 for the Ancaster stone to be quarried (it's all one piece!!), carved and fitted. The original had been hacked to bits to make a smaller fireplace :shock: In this picture, we still have the lovely concrete floor, too!! :wink:

And, yes they are plastic windows!! But don't worry, they're definitely going!!!! Eventually, they'll all be Oak

That floor is just gorgeous - love the direction its laid - i.e. across the short rather than the long way - guess theres a technical term, but I don't know it! Looks lovely anyway - like the Jack Rubbish too!!!!!

Flags are great........guess room will take some heating! We have very old flags in our 'snug' - gorgeous - just need a nice rug to go down on them now. Next room is an oak floor - nice to have the hard floors - much more in keeping and so much easier to keep clean with dog/children/country lifestyle!!

Our flag floor is breathable and has underfloor heating, too A lot of work but well worth it!

It's the depth of the stone that costs the money. We had to wait 9 months for that particular piece, as they don't often bring it out with that bed depth. When it was first ordered, the quarry kept ringing us asking were we sure we wanted it that deep :lol:
