give your other half my sympathy.. I find very little can be done to renovate the 1947 variety.. Mrs H agrees. Suggests we do more to restore our very old house. restoring me is not any kind of priority (except for a few pints of Abbots.)

I'm beginning to feel like quite an up to date model, having rolled off the production line in 1959.
The olden days when we were young were cold and uncomfortable and I for one am glad I don't live there any more.
Scratchy loo paper, icy bedrooms (getting into bed fully clothed until the bed had warmed up, and then changing into pyjamas under the covers), weekly baths and daily stand-up washes in a cold bathroom ......
My favourite period is Now.

There was a van that went round the estate selling veg and stuff. It had a crank start! I may feel the same in a few years.
I grew up in the era of Clangers, power cuts, and Chopper bikes.

Oh dear,
Pity the poor old 1946 vintage members of this forum then.
It made me laugh/cry really - the radio announced that it was dreadful how old people suffered being cold and in order to cope they put an extra jumper on in winter and only heat the room they are using.
What else do you do in winter? we are supposed to be saving fuel yet in winter "they" expect us to heat all rooms in the house and have the living/main room at a temperature suitable for short sleeved t shirts in January?
It makes me feel my age that sort of thing because if only old decrepits wear a jumper indoors (I won't mention the thick socks) and only heat the main room, then I am an old decrepit.
I wouldn't/couldn't live as my parents did - holding clothes against a one bar electric fire in the morning to dry the damp out of them and watching the steam rise before you put them on - but they had only open fires which are not suitable for heating for an hour in the morning.
Can't they understand - it's not the money, the posh fools, it's the way we were brought up - to be economical and thrifty! They are the people who heat their homes to temperatures which they complain about in summer when they use air cooling to make it so low that you need to put an extra cardi on ....
Rant over - I feel better now and Nurse is coming round with my tablets....

Ours did have the luxury of a foil top, but I didn't really like milk and it wasn't a pleasant experience. On cold days we had frozen lumps in ours, which we were told was ice cream.

One school I attended used to stand the bottles in a big tray of hot water on really cold days. It was very comforting, in a disgusting sort of way.
The 1/3 pint milk bottles used to be balanced on the old radiators (mentioned above) to warm up.
UGHH! As my local newsagent used to say when his tea got cold, warm as an old woman's legs.
I remember finding one bottle in mid summer that had slipped down the back. :shock:
For glue sniffing I preferred gripfix.
It smelt like almonds or mazipan.
Tasted disgusting though)
As for heating more than one room that was reserved for Christmas week.
