The Lincoln ones have been planted, not in the street but on the buildings' former footprint, to "screen" a car park (which begs the question, if it's so bad it needs to be screened, should it be there in the first place? and also rather undermines the other excuse for the demolitions, of "revealing" the castle).

If you are standing on the pavement the tree branches are above your head, sheltering you from the rain, making a pleasant whooshing sound in the wind and generally looking pretty. They do not obscure the view of the castle, which is not a castle in the air.

I have just been sent this photo, the cottage looks really rough in this one.

Ooh, that's a lucky thing to get your hands on Rob! Fascinating glimpse of the past there- the days before power hedge trimmers! The cottage does look a bit forlorn, I wonder what it was like inside then?

Possibly not too far from what it looks like today Joce. It hasn't been touched in almost 300 years inside, apart from lots being covered over in the 60's/70's with cement plaster.
I am not sure but I think that may be a badly deteriorated daub render on the gable end in the photo, There are some holes in the render at the moment and it does indeed look like daub, although it has been patched with cement in places.
Nice photos though.

Edit - The chimney closest in the photo has Victorian brick on the top, this is on a Tudor brick inglenook, is it normal for the chimney to have been extended like this?

I'm not sure I feel the same way about the cottage Joce,It's brought Ms Robgil and my self to breaking point on more than one occasion, still , I am determined not let it beat me though.

Yes, our chimneys have Victorian bricks on top with Tudor below. It might have been done because the original had deteriorated too much, or to raise it to get a better draught. Or even to correct a lean - didn't work in our case! I wish I could find an old photo of our house, but here's a new one:
