Thanks Raf, I didn't know about Wimpole. I've never seen one in the flesh, but there's one at Uppark and one at the Red Lodge in Bristol apparently.
If you'd like any suggestion for overriding interfering husbands I'm happy to oblige - though I don't have perfect success with this either. I didn't put the Rayburn in (or strip the brick). The Rayburn's indispensible though I don't use it for cooking.
Some more befores and afters. Actually I think the house looks better in the grey cement render piccy.
It's so lovely to see people's houses again.

I think it is sticky backed vinyl in the hall and not even wood panelling lol!!!

Looks like we have same thing as Robgil, the fancy ridge sneaked in later, though we have an aeriel photo form 1964 which shows the ridge, and then a later one without it again, so maybe they come and go depending on the thatcher?

Yep I know, the thatch is around 4ft thick now, it seems like whenever its been rethatched they've only taken a few layers off, so the original layers are still on there underneath. Its a bit like tree rings you can see the different date layers running through it

Is that actually a conservatory in the modern sense of the word? It looks more like a greenhouse to me, and possibly full of plants as well.

I think it was more like a greenhouse as you say (though it would have been South facing and I'd imagine it got rather warm!)
We do have a couple of other greenhouses elsewhere in the grounds, which avoids disrupting the elevation. It's interesting to note the changes in window configuration between the two photos as well.

I don't suppose anybody will make cast iron windows any more. Wrought iron would be almost as hard to come by. Steel windows are made by the Cotswold Casement Company: http://www.cotswold-casements.co.uk/
It would be a fair bit cheaper to have leaded windows in oak frames.
