then and now?

anybody got any then and now photos to share?
i got some photos from some neighbours of the cottage from the olden days which shows it when it had nice wooden windows , a flush ridge , no render on the chimneys and no stupid diy extension. it did have an outdoor toilet and a porch though.
the porch has long gone and the outside toilet has been found buried in the garden.

I could (and probably should) post some pics, but our "then" and "now" are the same, as we have only owned the house two months and the extent of my doings so far is lots of wallpaper stripped off the hall, landing and stairs, which I daren't show any of you in case I get cursed for removing a work of art! :wink:

Would it be wrong to mourn the demise of the pretty porch in your "then" pictures, Rob? It adds so beautifully to the gingerbread house look!

Still staggered that it isn't listed - it would be an obvious one even on a drive-by assessment.

And how interesting that the old photos show a flush ridge, whereas gentrified later taste (the post-1960 weekend cottage crowd??) has imposed a decorative one, which local thatchers will probably now think is "right". The porch was all the ornament it used to need (and ought to go back, I think).

dont worry Gareth , it will be listed eventually , it would be irresponsible not to. i dont think it ever belonged to the week end cottage crew , as far as i know it was always owned by the people who lived in it which is why i think it has survived so well as its owners never really had buckets of money to throw at it , us included. i really cannot understand how it escaped listing as every house around it is listed , however a lot of these houses have since gone through some very drastic changes , the cottage behind for instance boasts some lovely plastic dg windows although the one beside it does look quite beautiful. i would say that from what i have seen this cottage is one of if not the most un-interfered with, very strange indeed.
the porch looks like it should be there , the front of the house looks bare without it. there are a lot of similar porches along the street so finding clues as to what it looked like along with this photo evidence should mean that we can fabricate and reinstate it to as close as we can without too much difficulty. the flush ridge and other details are most definitely on the cards when we get the roof done.

I was thinking that the weekend cottage crew imposed their tastes on the local thatchers and the local thatchers then learnt which side their bread was buttered and did it for any client

i really cannot understand how it escaped listing as every house around it is listed , however a lot of these houses have since gone through some very drastic changes , the cottage behind for instance boasts some lovely plastic dg windows although the one beside it does look quite beautiful. i would say that from what i have seen this cottage is one of if not the most un-interfered with, very strange indeed.

Might it have been condemned as unfit for human habitation at the time the listers came round, so they didn't bother? (there are some horrid photos of the result of that sort of thing I could post).

It also reminds me a bit od my time working in Lincoln, you could tell where we had Article 4 Directions restricting replacement windows, as every house had replacement windows - once the Direction was confirmed, all the householders were sent a letter advising them that the now "must apply for permission to change the windows" - lots of them took "must" as an order, dutifully applied, and were granted permission. :roll:

the porch looks like it should be there , the front of the house looks bare without it. there are a lot of similar porches along the street so finding clues as to what it looked like along with this photo evidence should mean that we can fabricate and reinstate it to as close as we can without too much difficulty. the flush ridge and other details are most definitely on the cards when we get the roof done.

Good. Too many porches nowadays are little houses in themselves. All you need is a shelter while you find the keys. Painted a tasteful F&B moss green, of course .

i know , or my garden somehow pushed forward and surrounded it, either way its a horrid grey metal pole, i want the wooden one back! perhaps the council would consider making me a new one , if perhaps i threatened the metal one with my angle grinder?

thatchers seem to use the ridge as their signature , the guy who is doing my roof recognised his dads ridge , im not sure how he will react to me wanting a plain flush ridge , perhaps i will start a trend.
you know i have been told that the house went through a few periods of dereliction , perhaps i should investigate more , when did these drive by listings take place?
please dont mention f&b Gareth , im not a fan (no offence to those that are) , moss green yes in its very natural state , silvered oak i find is also nice though , silvered oak with a nice moss green coating and we are talking some seriously proper pleasing aesthetics right there.. my green copper arts and crafts lantern would fit right in.

Check what date the neighbouring listed houses were listed - that'll be when they missed yours (it appears to be 1988, which is towards the end of the Great Resurvey, making it all the more surprising)

if it was 1988 then the house would have been as it is now. very strange. are both Gurnards and Jackdaw cottages listed? sorry but i have no idea how to check but if so , one of them is directly behind clipper cottage and not visible from the road. could i be opening up a can of worms here?

edit , perhaps they mistook clipper cottage for the cottage to its rear?

I can't find those house names, but they can change (we have an awful time when "Manor Farm Cottage" becomes "The Old Hall" etc, but was listed under its old name)

thats a turn up Gareth , there is only a hand full of listed houses on this street , 4 in fact. i typed in ''palmer street' and got 15 hits but only 4 are on this palmer street in suffolk , there are much more than 4 historic buildings on this street.

I agree with you with regards to the ridge on the thatch. I would definitely reinstate that porch; it is just enough to make the house look really pretty and good for climbers (sorry to be so girly).

We have a porch on the back of the house, but it is very rotten and I believe a 1970's addition, put on when the farm house was sold off by the charity that had owned it for years. Will post pictures later today.

Joce - please can you confirm which are before and which are after? There is a gorgeous Georgian print room there which appears to have been trashed in a later photo... :wink:

We also have some ugly fencing panels which we will replace with hedging.

If you are patient, you can order bare root whips of native hedging (which I think are best suited to a country cottage) quite cheaply. There are a number of websites out there where can can order them through. They need to be planted now to end feb and are easy to do. As long as the soil is ok you just create a slit with a spade and drop the plant in, firming the soil around the plant. You will have to wait a while for them to mature, but this still only took around 5 years in our last house.

Look up www.ashridgetrees.co.uk We have used them before. Also www.hedgesdirect.co.uk, but there are lots of other sites out there.
