Pulled down because it got in the way of trade in the 1800s, replaced by not much. really.

Ah, that fits. But everything else in that picture has gone, too (hence my question about its location). Why? Who do we blame? (I have my suspicions.....)

What a tragedy! It's such a beautiful thing.

Now let me think. Which would we prefer - that elegant structure, or the monstrosity that sits above and glowers over the market square today?

Here's the Feltwell abode:-

It is a semi, so only half is mine! Built in 1899, rented out from the first day right up until 1986 - so it escaped the worst of "modernisation" over the years. It spent most of it's life as the Company Secretary's house for the former Wrekin Brewery, later Mineral Water Works, which was just behind the house - that was knocked down in 1970 but for some reason Greenall Whitney kept the house on for another 16 years.

The photo above had to be taken in winter - as you can't see very much of it in summer!

And here's the back, before I started knocking garages down and building new ones. The garden still looks like a building site

Ahh well, never mind! Thank you for your kind comments.

I did consider an inspection pit, but they can be quite dangerous I believe. Aside from the obvious hazard of falling in to one, they can have a nasty habit of trapping certain noxious gases that are heavier than air - I have heard that includes carbon monoxide (i.e. car exhaust fumes) and petrol vapour. It's possible to be overcome by such fumes - having had to drag 3 men out of a trench one time in my Civil Engineering days, I've seen just how quickly you can slip into unconsciousness with gases. So I decided just a good flat floor, a high lift jack and axle stands will suffice for when I'm crawling under the car.

Yes, but that is the beauty of your set-up, the fall in ground level allows you to have an external access and vent to the pit! Of course, I guess if your interest is more to working on the bikes, then a pit is not really that much of an advantage!

That is a very good point on venting Worms, and I confess one that I hadn't thought of.....

But, I'm happy with it as it is. For the numbr of times I get under a car some decent high-lift stands will do. I have seen ramps with a built-in jack mechanism as well - so you drive up the portable ramps as usual, then jack them up to get a further 8" or so of clearance. I get more storage as the garage is now as well. Most of my time in there will be on general houshold DIY and joinery, and with the motorbikes.

This is more garden porn, and the pics don't really do justice to the masses of white comfrey that has overtaken every bit of the garden. It is also supporting massess of bees, which is a lovely sound in the morning.
So Joce, not a chain saw, not a cockeral, but bees!!! Incidentally, hightly amused about complaints about 3.30 am cockerel crowing in my former village home of chelsea by the sea-- can one really sue a Parish Council for that sort of thing :shock:

i was goigg to comment about some baby porn but the words baby and porn just dont sound right when put together, we had a little girl on monday night. one very sore mum and one very shaken dad but one beautiful baby girl to show for it.i think i best get that cottage fixed now.
