Clearly people that like to drive uphill in Bungay have very narrow cars. Whereas those reckless downhill-driving types like to just hog as much of the road as they can.

I have to agree - Bungay is lovely.

Ah - you've hit on a cogent point, Feltwell. It's a one-way street.

But at the edge of town there's a large sign announcing "SATNAV ERROR - NO ACCESS" because flippin' sat-navs keep sending people the wrong way up Bridge Street.

The technology hasn't quite caught up with Bungay yet.

That Bungay butter cross photo is very reminiscent of Swaffham. I'm probably showing myself up here, but what's the history behind such structures? It's their similarity that I find curious.

According to Bungay's website:

It Is situated in the Market Place and provides a prominent starting point for the Town Trail. The seats under the Buttercross afford a resting place where leaflets can be studied prior to setting out.

So that's what it's for :lol: . There are only so many variations on the same basic form that the Georgians would have found acceptable, hence the similarity. Earlier ones are a bit more varied:

The Swaffham Butter Cross has certainly been used as bandstand 'marm, but I don't think that was its original purpose, which was, I believe, to mark the location of a market. Gareth's photos shows the sort of variety I've seen before (although not those specific ones) but it was Penner's photo of the Bungay one that struck a chord by being almost identical to Swaffham, although there are no obvious connections according to the websites I've seen. Love the Wymondham one though.

I've always understood that the Buttercross was normally intended to be the centrepiece and landmark of the market, offering some shelter to farmers and others in the event of rain.

Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place, where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. Pulled down because it got in the way of trade in the 1800s, replaced by not much. really.

The Buttercross in Witney has a new purpose now - meeting place in the evenings for all the local youth. Well, I guess if you want to hang around the streets doing nothing then it's best to do it in style!

Lovely pics from lots of you, and lovely buttercrosses, just gorgeous - and Penners I agree with you about the love of privacy and seclusion. Mind you, though ours might superficially look like the peace and quiet of the countryside:

this is the first time I haven't received complaints, as what with my singing, the chainsawing and the cockerel we are a pretty noisy bunch.
