I was going to write a long, erudite and hoepfully humourous list of human frailties, foibles and idiosyncracies - but for reasons of clarity and expediency it can be summarised as:

I think I can help there. It's a polyglotal word which can be broken down as follows:

Ana: from the Greek for "backwards"

Col: from the French for "collar"

uthon: from the suffix "athon" which is derived from "marathon", a contest drawn out to unusual length.

Thus "anacoluthon" means "to hold religious office for an unusually long time".

No need to get grumpy, it's all quite simple . . .

While searching for guidelines on using 'And' to begin a sentence, I found this: http://www.gpuss.co.uk/english_usage/start_sentence_conjunction.htm, which, if you click on the 'next' arrow, leads to a neat explanation of the practice, known as anapodoton, which basically means an omission (presumably of one of the conjunctive clauses missing by virtue of starting the sentence with 'And'). I then searched for anapodoton to verify the explanation and found the wiki link to anacoluthon, which seems to be a more generic term for a sentence being "without completion" (literally what "anacoluthon" means). So, I think, anapodoton is a specific description of an uncompleted sentence, which is a type of anacoluthon.

And that's when my head started to hurt. And I went back to continuing with my current plumbing project.

I don't know, turn my back for a second, and someone nicks my grumpy comments from another thread, starts a new one, and then tries to kill it off before I've had a chance to be grumpy about the whole thing!

Personalised number plates - again. I'm sure I'll offend someone, but this the one & only time that I can honestly say that the American term is better - Vanity plates.

Anyone (and I'm sorry, they are invariably older females) who is handed change or a receipt or bank card after paying for their goods in a shop, and stands there slowly filing them away in the myriad of compartments and sub-compartments of their purse - rather than moving out of the bl@@dy way and doing that to one side of the till so the person behind them can be served. (Note that this post-payment grumpiness is in addition to the similar but pre-payment grumpiness already expressed by Penners.)

Armpit dogs. Anyone who has a very small dog and insists on carrying it around under their arm. It's a dog - not a handbag - let it walk.
