Mrs M is always saying I should be on TVs "Grumpy Old Men".

I will restrain myself though here and not go into a long and protracted whinge about everything in life, because Mrs M is due with Baby Merlin in a few weeks, so grumpiness has been taken over by nursery decorating!

It is a difficult to be grumpy with a baby on the way, however I am sure that a lack of sleep and lots of crying will return grumpiness to the correct levels shortly.

In the meantime, why did Sainsburys reduce the number of slices of ham in a packet from 8 to 7. I can no longer get 4 days sandwiches out of a packet! And* did they reduce the price? No it stayed the same! Grrrr.....

Actually, Merlin, I don't regard that as universally sinful. The rules of grammar can be broken, so long as it's done for a specific purpose. In your case, I reckon it was done for emphasis. Ego te absolvo.

Hmm. I'd be interested to read views on this. I thought it was acceptable these days - I certainly confess to such usage.

I had a brief search for clarification but concluded I'd waded in beyond my depth when I discovered anacoluthon.

But if Penners says it's acceptable then that's good enough for me!

Also people that don't know that the speed limit depends on street lamps (which of course almost nobody realises) and therefore drive at 40mph in a 60mph limit.


For those that don't know, the speed limit of a road is dictated by three simple rules:
1) If there is a sign stating the speed limit then that is the speed limit.
2) If there isn't a sign but there are street lamps then the speed limit is 30mph.
3) If there are no signs nor street lamps then the speed limit is 60mph for single carriageway and 70mph for dual carriageway.

I dimly recalled the lamp post spacing also to be a factor, so I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Built-up_area_%28Highway_Code%29. Not sure if it just causes more confusion though.

I wonder if "street lighting" actually means the lights need to be working? So, during a power cut, would urban roads revert to 60, or even 70mph limits?
