Stripping paint from pine bay window and front door

I rather like that Ukranian blowlamp. Half a gallon of petrol and a match and you're good to go.
The description says it's 'unpretentious'. An essential quality in a blowlamp.

The good lady started stripping the bay today. A heat gun and a scraper were the weapons of choice. The paint stripped with relative ease which was good news. Even the cornice was ok to strip, I just need to buy a narrower scraper to get in the corners. On the whole the timber is in very good condition, there is however a couple of small areas of rot at the bottom and a large section of sill that has rotted out. Can anybody offer some advice on the best course of repair.

How good is your joinery? Most permanent fix is as I have done on the thread I mentioned earlier.

You could however be less drastic, cut that back in-situ with chisels and splice a new piece in with epoxy, retaining most of the original cill. It's not *that* bad.

I like to believe I can lend my hand to most things, I think this is within my capabilities. I will be able to get a better idea when the sash has been removed.

Out of interest what colours did you use on your bay Feltwell? Just so I can get an idea of how the colour compares to the chips online. Also that scraper you linked, was that the exact one you use as it appears to be a South African site.

Hello, the paint is Bedec MSP in Ivy Green and Butterscotch, both in satin finish.

The paint scraper is the exact one, it's made (or sold at least) by the Swedish company Allback, who make linseed paint (which is lovely stuff but I've given up on it - just too slow to dry to be practical to use for me). This UK website sells them, others may as well:-

Note the shaped ends in that picture are because someone has ground them down for their exact needs - they come square!

I doubt you'll find the window is any worse once the sashes are out - it's the visible external bits that suffer generally, rot in sash windows tends to be quite readily apparent in my experience at least.

It is hard to tell from a photo, but the sill while quite rotten looks to have quite localised rot. I would look into chiseling out the rot and epoxying a new pice of wood as Feltwell suggests. If it was a single sash box not part of a bay, there might be an argument to replace the sill as it is much easier with a single window, but in a bay that would be a prohibitive amount of work.

No samples I'm afraid. Give Bedec a call and they will send you out a printed colour card which is OK but not brilliant, the Ivy Green on it is I think a bit darker than the actual paint. Problem is the difference in surface finish can make a colour look a little different.

Looking at paint colours on any computer monitor doesn't work too well - every monitor interprets the colours a little differently. I use my works laptop with a large 2nd monitor plugged into it, the colours look quite different on each, even to a typical man like me who doesn't really perceive different shades of colours very well.

I was thinking of repainting our back door using Bedec multi-surface paint but was put off by the lack of sample pots or test panels - my local paint supplier was very positive about it though, offering a 750ml tester pot for only about £18.
I'm afraid I went back to the same Little Green intelligent exterior eggshell I used about 6 years ago.

Bedec will send you painted brush offs of their standard colours. They sent us several samples of their colours so we could determine whether they were going to work for us.

In the end their standard colours weren't quite right so they made us a custom mix. We sent them a swatch of what we wanted and they sent us a tin of paint. It is a very good match and MSP is a joy to work with compared to the Dulux Trade Weathershield we were fighting with previously. It is more expensive but in the end we went with it because their customer service and technical knowledge is second to none.

Thats interesting, I will have to get in touch with them. What sort of coverage are you getting with this paint, as in how far does it go?

I can't remember what they quote for coverage but 1 x 2.5l tin of the ivy green did all the frame of my bay with a reasonable amount left over. You don't need primer or undercoat, the 1st coat you dilute a little with water, that's it.

Interesting that they do paint swatches now - I'm sure when I asked they didn't, but hat was some time ago. They were very helpful on other matters though.

Where the rot is even "less bad" I suggest wood hardener (various types available) and filler. It's one of the times where I think modern materials do help. There is no point in replacing pieces of wood (which I think is difficult to do well) unless it really needs it. The cill might be beyond such repair but this could apply to the lower parts of the frame. OTH, such a repair to the cill might do for a few more years while you do all the other important jobs!

I'll second MatthewC's suggestion of using wood hardener and filler. I'm frankly amazed with the results that we got from Ronseal's Wood Hardener and their two-part wood filler. The sashes were in a pitiful condition when we took them out and after several rounds of filling and sanding they look great.

Craig - Sorry for the delay in responding but I think that it was about an extra £15 or so for Bedec to mix up a custom colour. You have to buy a 5L tin of paint, however. We have so much painting to do that we weren't concerned about getting through 5L but for others I suppose it might be an issue.

We tried several manufacturers of paint and for whatever reason the colour was never right. It was so bad, in fact, that Sikkens sent us vouchers for 15L of paint! Bedec said that they mix their custom colours up by hand so I thought it was worth a punt. Anyway, the colour is pretty well spot on and in my limited experience seems to dry with fewer brush marks than the Dulux and Sikkens water-based paints were were using before.

Im going to have quite a lot of painting to do including 2 bays, 6 large sashes, a large casement and patio doors.

What is the best thing to fill the joints with in the timber before painting?

This is the progress so far, its in very good condition. The roof timber and lead need replacing and a couple of localised repairs to do but the layers of paint have protected it well.

Wow - That looks amazing! The detailing to the top is very nice. I tend to use linseed putty to fill little cracks. Takes a little while to dry. After stripping horrible flaky paint and finding perfect wood I have a theory that it's the 3 layers of linseed paint applied in the first 70 years that protected the wood from the cracking of the many layers of modern plastic gloss applied over the following 30 years. I tend to strip and go at them with linseed paint so that future owners can do their cracky gloss thing again without causing too much damage. Wood needs oil!

I notice the bay has no gutter. If the roof needs replacing be sure to make sure the new roof extends enough to drip well past the stone sill. I guess it does if you have a stone sill in such good condition. It would look lovely exposed.

The roof does extend past the sill which must have done the window justice. It would be good to expose the sills however im going to have to paint them because a couple have cracks and the new cills and lintel in the extension, we are doing, I am making them out of concrete in order to match the size and shape of the existing

Hi Craig,

Malcolm is dead right, timber needs oil and putty provides an excellent means to fill small cracks and fissures or to close joints. Hopefully you will be using linseed oil based paints to produce the final finish and if so I would recommend that you apply a thin coat of linseed oil to the bare wood a couple of days before you lay down the first coat. In my experience this helps to refresh the timber itself after chemical or heat stripping - and also weather exposure - and assists adhesion of the new paint.

You can make concrete sills out of white cement and buff sand which is a reasonable approximation of buff coloured stone sills. Not perfect but good enough to allow you to strip the front sill if you want
