Visiting a stately home (Blickling, I think) a few years ago I admired some amazingly shiny brass and asked what they used on it.

Apparently the NT swear by Autosol.

I too use Autosol on all my metals.its amazing stuff and at less than a fiver a tube its really worth it as a little goes a long way.

Number 12 done and dusted. 13, 14, 15, still need to be built/bought (that vaulted undercroft stairwell one, and the two glazed ones in the porch - gave myself a break by deciding the porch is a separate room that will need a different treatment anyway).

Thanks so much for all the help and support and wonderful tips. In the end I got round cracks like this:

by getting Dad to do them! He very carefully prised off the beading and re-attached it along a bit- next to the middle/side bit, if that makes sense.

The unevenness, or "holes" in the paint we smoothed and softened with Mr P's amazing filler - OneFill.

Large holes left by obsolete knobs we filled with twigs from the garden and built up Ronseal around them.

Door furniture still to go back on. Every Georgian screw has been kept and cleaned up, or had the notch re-cut, to be re-used.

It's taken 4 litres of paint, a tub of filler, and 3 months :shock:

Too kind- most of the time I'm lazily slobbing around on the Internet, chatting to you lot and lusting after things I can't afford.

I wouldn't be able to do any of it if I didn't have an amazing team of cyber-friends, a very long-suffering Dad and a husband who gives me all his cash, so I consider myself very blessed.

Northing wrong with Autosol! I started using it when I was 15 with my Grandfather who as well as French Polisher/Grainer/Painter was a very skilled bronzer/sprayer (and very Delboyish in his dedication to Ridley road market which he went to almost every Sunday of his life, frequently coming back with 48 boxes of T cut and Autosol...) If you have ever had tea at the Ritz and admired the brass kickplates and bar footrail over the last 20 years, they may have been polished using Autosol, by my Grandfather and I, same with Le Meridien Picadilly etc. We polsihed hundreds and hundreds of kickplates, handplates, liftplates etc with T cut and Autosol (and more yellow dusters than you could shake several sticks at) Very handy stuff.
