There are two illuminated reset buttons

Country Boy - we had an oil Stanley in our last house. I think it was an earlier model than yours, because it had just one burner, and two deflector paddles.

However, from what I remember, if the reset button was illuminated, that meant "lock out", and the first thing you tried was pushing the reset button back in.

If that fails, have you looked for a "high limit" reset (often a protruding pin underneath a cover). This can lock out if the unit has reached too high a temperature for some reason. My Stanley didn't have one of these, but your more modern one might.

Next thought - does yours in fact have the deflector paddles or not? If it does (although actually I doubt this) then check to make sure that none of the fireproof ceramic foam has broken off and blocked a burner.

Can't think of anything else at the moment - I'll get back if I do.

How right you are Penners.

I was forced only this morning to make a resolution that I would never get the "strops" ever again if I was faced with 17 clean socks before I could make a matching pair.

This one I shall keep, I didn't relish the thouht of having to wear everything coloured pink as I was confronted with the absurd choise of being responsible for my own laundry in the future.

Much worse than this, she actually theatened me with the prospect of having to cook my own meals if I ever complained that just because tesco's trolleys have a mind of their own it is no excuse for me refusing to push them.

Now, that is serious enough to make resolutions and keep them ,a different wife (I immediately thougt).

It dawned on me ,once again, that resolutions are totally out of the question.

Aha! Now I know where they've all gone, I can stop looking for them!! But what does one do with the orphans? Will the siblings *ever* come back for them? No, sorry, Jaqy. No chance whatsoever. It's against the laws of physics.

But don't worry about the poor little orphans. Socks are naturally solitary creatures - they prefer it that way. It's only the hand of Man that has forced them to live together in pairs.

This is why they will so readily make a bid for the singular freedom of The Sock Universe.

Judging by the weather forecast, I doubt whether they'll get their barls lit!

Ah - they do that in the church porch! Once lit they usually stay lit too. despite the weather.

It's the fire swirling around in the small square which may cause probs. Health and Safety struck a couple of years ago... barriers erected. Before that we just went with clothes which we hoped would protect us!

However, I suspect that the road en route will be littered with fallen trees. So far touch wood we have electricity still, but we are preparing for that to fail as it often does.

We have plenty of food, booze and logs in, think we may just give the Allendale village hall ceilidh a miss.... Oh dear, I do think I may be getting... past it all!

I love the simple elegance of your theory, Penners. It has the same ring of truth as Mr T Pratchett's assertion that there is a Chuck Key Fairy (an associate of the Tooth Fairy, of course).

Oooh - don't get me started on chuck keys, Moo!

You can have half a dozen tools which use chuck keys, but are any of the keys interchangeable? Are they b*ggery! But use the wrong key in a chuck just once, and its teeth are mashed for good and all.

Fortunately, increasing numbers of power tools have keyless chucks these days. They are a huge benefit, unless you actually want to use the tool for anything more arduous than stirring tea. Give them a tough hole to drill, and your bit will revolve happily in the chuck, no matter how hard you've tightened it.

Oops! You did get me started, didn't you? Sorry!
