I wonder if any of your 'neighbours' ever lived in your house?

I haven't found any so far. There is a memorial to the family who lived here in 1840, but I think they may have been buried on the ancestral family estate near Lincoln. I have found the house on the 1911 census, but it doesn't show on a quick search of earlier ones, despite the house name not having changed. One day I'll be able to afford membership of Ancestry, and download the record for the village.

That cat wants to come in and YES I HATE the plastic windows, hence my contribution to the 12 days of Christmas song!! Fortunately we only have them at the back of the house, the front of our house, unlike the others in the street, has original wooden sash.

ps. that cat belongs to our neighbours, she is really cute so we don't mind her being so friendly, the labrador just quietly disappears to his box when she come into the house!!!

That's just the default setting for when they are uploading data to the mothership. Their plans are quite well advanced I fear.

However some people may manage to appease them,

Joce, the Big Cats were their first attempt at infiltration. These proved ineffective, too large for the typical home and prone to an unfortunate malfunction that resulted in the human subject being consumed before much useful information was gained. Most of these older models have now been decomissioned and can be reprogrammed to a limited extent while still in the juvenile phase, as you have witnessed.

Before the squirrel appeared on the scene one of the magpies seemed surprised to see a mouse running out from underneath the oil tank to grab some seeds ignoring whoever was there feeding and run back in again. By the time I got the camera/camcorder to hopefully see a reapeat, the magpies had flow.. It was so funny to watch. 5 mins later they were back and that's when the squirrel appeared.

No, I'm sorry young lady, but you're mixing up cats and big cats. I've always liked big ones - they have a majesty and gravitas that the smaller variety not only lacks, but has actively eschewed.

Penners! - I am amazed at your uncharacteristic lack of awareness on this point. If you like, I could draw up an educational cat programme of events for 2010. Of course you must come here and witness the gravitas of my Lord Rochester, but also I'd recommend a trip to Norwich to meet Champion Treadfast Smarty Pants:

and, if you like 'em large you had better take Mrs P off to Norway to buy a Norwegian Forest Cat. A more dignified, large, yet gentle pet cannot be found.

The year could progress excitingly with a trip to Egypt to worship at the temple of per-Bast and pay your respects to the cat goddess, and then you'd be ready for the grand finale of the National at Earl's Court in November, where spectators claw to get to the front to see who is crowned Grand Champion, and where I witnessed hissing and spitting the year that the Burmese beat the British Bilbo Baggins. I think after such a year you may be ready to revise your opinions.

Moo - have you been at the pudding brandy again? In which ways are the majority of dogs* more useful?

Let's examine the facts:

Cats need no exercise, will feed and wash themselves and keep mice down. I have no time to wash exercise or animals, frequently forget to feed them, and have unwanted mice.

Dogs fetch sticks. I don't need sticks.

Ergo, cats are more useful.

* The majority of dogs in this country are what we as a family call "hamster-dogs" - and this applies to any dog smaller than anything required to bring down an antelope.

Oh, don't start me off again, FW!

Dogs kill mice, too. My daughter's Parsons Jack Russell is an accomplished hunter, having so far caught many mice, rats and moles.

And our Westie is excellent at keeping antelope away from the house - as witness the fact that I haven't seen an antelope around here for as long as I can remember.

And dogs are nice people, too. Whereas cats simply regard the world as existing purely for their own convenience.
