Selecting a good lime plasterer

Excellent work! What you described in your earlier post (exterior stucco ruled to look like ashlar, with keystones over the windows etc) is what I have under the paint outside. I am getting a firm in next week to look at it for me.

I saw the firm's sign outside a large Victorian semi on Haverstock Hill whose elaborate stucco window surrounds and porch they are working on and seem to be doing a good job.

Both due to not having remortgaged yet and Skillingtons' schedule ours can't be done this year.

I'm pleased to have saved the reed ceiling - in terms of cost it's roughly the same as having a new one fitted but how very much more satisfying!

They have advised lining paper on top and - guess what - FnB estate emulsion. OK, they know I like FnB for the colours but Mr Head Plasterer of Chatsworth says there is no point skipping lining paper and using limewash or distemper on old lime plaster if there are no issues with damp. He said if there were new lime walls or ceiling limewash would be appropriate as apparently it moves, but for old surfaces he recommends lining paper every time.

Most good lime plasterers and tradesmen will wether they have a website or not tell you of recent customers and be happy to supply references without you even having to ask. Its all about making the customer feel that they have a real specialist on board who knows what he is doing and of course price as well.
