Seasonal Snow

Thanks so much for your very kind offer Jaqy, and to the others who posted in response to my complaints of No Oil. I've spoken to the oil delivery people this morning though, and apparently I'm on the books for today. ( we ordered at the start of December)

Hopefully we'll be warm for Christmas!

Prince Charles once asked a young lady in similar, erm, gravity-defying attire if he needed to have 2 warm spoons ready in case of any accidents. I dread to think what his father would have said in the same circumstances.

The snow has looked lovely in Witney especially on the meadow and river near our house (the ducks had snow on their backs -poor things!) but it is messing up Christmas arrangements. My sister might not be able to get over from Germany and my old Dad is making a fuss about me driving to Surrey to pick him up - I've told him I'm collecting him whatever the weather throws at us but he's getting all anxious the way old folk do. I'm going to suggest to my family that we have our Christmas get-together in the Spring in future!

A spring get together would be much more sensible. If it's like this on Boxind Day I'm going to have to pull out of our Christmas journey, I can't leave the chickens with frozen water and food. I went out there this afternoon and everything was frozen solid, despite there being a radiator in with them.

Thank you Joce; I quite like them too, but then I am biased :wink:

We still haven't got the "right sort of snow", though. I remember as a child being able to set a small ball rolling across the grass, and it would pick up snow as it went so you'd have the bulk of your snowman in seconds, almost. This snow is very powdery, and you really have to work it to get any structure to it.

We're never satisfied are we?!

Yes - funny snow. The occasional bit of icy hail means it doesn't stick very well. It's great for sledging though!

Ours is beginning to melt this morning, thank goodness. We had about five inches in a very short time yesterday morning on top of the previous stuff which caused road chaos.

However, I was really impressed by First Great Western who got us to Bristol and back, somewhat delayed but with such humour and good cheer it was amazing. The staff were so good at letting us know where 'our' train was, why it had stopped and when it would come and communications actually worked. Bouquets to all at Temple Meads, especially the lovely man who regularly popped into the waiting room to help stranded passengers.

So different from my suburban commutes twenty years ago when I sat on Basinsgtoke station for hours with no staff in sight.

Our cats have refused to go out at all since the snow arrived and are demanding full service litter trays.

We went to London for a long weekend when the last batch of snow had finished and was causing all sorts of problems. Hull Trains had cancelled their train that we had booked at the last minute, and so had to change at Doncaster after taking a different train. We then found ourselves stood in a carriage with people squeezing past to get to the buffet carriage. If this wasn't bad enough, Mrs Wobs is expecting, so I was working out which passenger to guilt trip into giving up their seat for her. However, she had a word with the gurad, and he let us both sit in 1st class! Not only that, but we got free tea.

He was so nice, we even wrote a thank you letter to the company afterwards.

Don't suggest white gloves and silver domes to them, they might demand those too. Tray has to be completely clean and not used by the 'other' cat to be deemed satisfactory for use, other venues of choice have included my pot plants. Now daughter is home, she panders to her cat's every whim so he now has his own tray. I took both cats out today but snow is up to their tummies and they were most put out. Are they wussies?

A friend of mine did this to Virgin trains, such was the quality of the service she received.

A few days later she had a reply, saying so sorry that she was unhappy with the service please accept a £10 voucher to make amends.

She wrote back with a copy of the first letter, explaining that she had great service, wasn't complaining and here is your £10 voucher.

A few days later she got a reply saying how sorry they were etc and here was £20.

At which point he gave up

I must say though, that the people responsible for getting Chris from Grantham to London every day take their duties extremely seriously, and so does he, as he has been in the office every day at the usual time, when people who live far closer aren't. He subscribes to an Internet service whereby we are notified ( before we get out of bed) what the delays will be.

When he has been seriously delayed ( about 5 times in 2 and 1/2 years) he has been reimbursed the cost of his ticket.

Mind you, for £800 a month you would expect this level of service.
