There was about 4 inches of snow in Hertfordshire today as we battled through the mostly ungritted roads to get to a friend-of-a-friend's wedding where our band was due to open the evening proceedings. Because of the conditions, two of us hitched a lift in the singer's 4x4 and were able to make good progress (when we didn't have to stop and help move 2WD cars out of the way), but the second guitarist and the drummer didn't make it, along with - apparently - about 80 of the wedding guests.

But the show went on and I suspect the bride and groom were grateful that anyone managed to turn up at all. Fortunately, the disco people also managed to turn up, so they were not reliant on us for music, just the first dance and a half hour selection of the bride's favourite songs. So all's well that ended well, but what a daft time of year to get married!

Not very snowy here but that line "earth stood hard as iron" makes a lot of sense. Our £200 of oil lasted ten days and ran out on Friday, and I've just hosted the iciest family Christmas of my life. No hot water so can't wash, which is maybe just as well as the sinks aren't draining (frozen pipes?) I think my sister in law is pretty shocked at the ambient temperature of the rooms (around 5 degrees C) and has plugged in all the fan heaters in the children's rooms as apparently the modern child can't cope with a fire.

I hope I can buy some more barrels of oil tomorrow but yesterday they said they didn't have any left.

Planning to spend the week in bed, unless anyone has a better idea!

What have they run out of, the containers or the oil? I'd have thought far more likely that it's the containers. Do you not have the ones that you bought last time? Can you not take them back to them to be re-filled?

Abouut 4 - 6" of snow here - kids are being tortured as they're all ill and can't go out and play in it They desperately want to go out but know that they need to keep warm and that they feel ill if they start moving about too much. I'm just getting over the lurgy, the kids all have it now - better this weekend than next, it's one that seems to take a while to shake off but they should all feel better by then. Mrs F shows no signs yet, we're just hoping she doesn't get it for Christmas . She is a hardy soul though, a couple of years back we all had full-blown flu except her - somehow she often escapes these things.

We have quite a steep-pitched roof, so as the weather warms up we have the slightly disconcerting sound to look forward to of big sheets of snow detaching themselves from the roof and sliding down - they make a surprisingly loud sound!

Feltwell - yes, it's the containers that have all been used. They make you put a deposit on them so we took ours straight back to reclaim it - let's hope they are asking people to bring them back promptly. They're closed today, which is a shame as Chris is around to help. If they have some barrels tomorrow I'm sure they'd help me load them into the car, then I could use the wheelbarrow here - but it's figuring out how to lift them to the top of the step ladder and them pour them into the tank. :? There's a tree above the tank with low branches so I'm wondering if I could tie a rope onto the barrel handle, throw it over the branch and pull it upwards so the tree has the weight as I pour it in, if that makes sense. Or maybe I should just spend today lifting 25kg weights in the air to get fit enough for it! Or maybe empty half the barrel into a bucket and go up the ladder with 13 kg. Hmm.

I hope everyone gets better soon anyway Feltwell, and yes, mummies aren't allowed to get ill!

Hello, it's snowy down here in Devon too. We can't get out despite spending all morning digging and gritting - the ice is too thick.
New cat had his first ever outing yesterday - bit of a shock for the poor chap.
Sorry to hear about the oil crisis Jose. That's grim. I'd heard that there are oil shortages - let's hope you get some before Christmas. Vicky x

Joce, don't risk hurting yourself....or getting covered in oil!! If you get some oil tomorrow, or whenever, let me know and one of us will pop down and get it the tank for you.

Syphons only work down hill. The pipe can go uphill but the end tank has to be lower than the start tank which doesn't sound like it is in this case.

A rope over a tree sounds like an idea but is unlikely to work due to friction. A rope over a pulley up a tree is more likely to work but I wouldn't want to do it for 25kg.

Decanting into smaller containers would be my method if I didn't have access to a pump which would be the best way of doing it.

and here's the garden at my new place where I worked for five hours yesterday in freezing conditions whilst it fell. This was taken at lunchtime after only three hours
Somehow I don't think that my rooflight will get fitted tomorrow, neither will the scaffolding be taken down.
