Clearly it's scenic value has improved in the 20 years since I last went there. I'm sure the nature reserve is lovely, so long as you stand inside it and don't look through the fence!

Just a quick update. Street measured (20 cm narrower than we will leave it with the skinny scaffold) LA man, after three phone calls, has finally confirmed we can have a licence to erect. Roof work should commence at the back end of next week Andy is still playing chimney Jenga, yes at this time :roll: , so I've broken off from wine drinking, kitchen/ curtain/ paint browsing to update you all. My thoughts exactly m'lady but no, he's not stuck. Luckily he's working on the outside of the chimney tonight. He "cleaned" it last week, form the inside :roll: he look like he'd been dug up by the time he got home :lol:

Curtains? Well anything that's not blue plastic and duct tape would be an improvement :roll: I have seen a few rather nice, though very expensive, English Heritage door curtains on a trip to the Abbey today. As to wine, I'm not too fussy. White, cold and dry and red at room temperature (around 10⁰c at the moment) my main criteria is "plenty of it" :lol:

Bubble wrap drapes rather nicely, insulates well and lets some light in whilst still ensuring privacy, not expensive either :lol:

The problem with that is lorries then can't get to you.... This week I've had seven boards of kingspan delivered. They had to come back a second time because they came on a 38ton lorry! You can't get a 38ton lorry down country lanes and along our bridle path. I did tell them. So they sent the same wagon a week later. Muppets. I must also point out that seven boards don't weigh 38 ton. If they do, I'm going to need to reinforce the rafters! :shock:

I'm expecting the same this week when a staircase arrives.

The best was when six bags of lime where deliverd on a large builders merchant crane lorry. It took them an hour and a visit from t'manager to manoeuvre past the scaffolding. I blame the drivers who blunder on and refuse to comply with "stop and phone us when you get to the end of the lane" instructions.

Then they blame you for living where we do.

We've been blackballed by the skip hire firm too....

It can be frustrating from the other side of the fence as well FW.

I remember many years ago, being asked by an extremely posh young man to deliver some kitchen worktops to his house. I asked if we can get a 12tonne lorry to the address - "it's a bit bigger than a fire engine" says I "and about 10' high" - and I am assured you can.

Delivery day comes, driver comes back with worktop still on board - there's a very low (only 7'6" clearance) bridge on the private road leading to the house. Indignant customer phones up about where his worktop is and comes out with "Ohh but I can get a stretch limo up to the house and they're enormous".

Well that's obvious then, we'll hire a stretch limo to deliver your worktop :roll:

Oh dear, sorry to read that FW. I've no solution but know how you feel!
We struggle too and new drivers in companies seem to arbitrarily decide they can't get up here, when there's been a long history ( for example the oil company, who now insist we must have a special vehicle)

It can depend on the skill of the driver too. My last place had a long steeply sloping tarmac drive with a sharp bend half way up, and a ditch either side. Plus a tight entrance off a narrow lane. A, admittedly smaller than normal, ready mix concrete lorry reversed up there with little trouble, but my ex business partner managed to put our Transit van in the ditch!
