The Bell Hotel in Malmesbury is built from stone taken (stolen)from the abbey next door as are many of the houses in the town.

I'm not convinced that this would have received Listed Building Consent, though.

We need stronger legislation. Henry VIII should be retrospectively and posthumously prosecuted.

And one of the most famous cases of architectural theft....the Citadel in Cairo was built with limestone removed from the Great Pyramid

Not to mention the Elgin Marbles, although they weren't used to rebuild anything. Or would they be classed as art rather than architecture?

If I had to replaced some badly spalled bricks, would it be better to use modern, machine-made brick which will spoil the elevation or use reclaimed brick which is 'messing with the historians'?

I had to do exactly that on a job late last year, and found a good source of new, hand-made soft red bricks which were a perfect match here. It's nearly always possible to find new to match old, even if it sometimes at a price.

Lovely old stone farmhouses in Northumberland, built of Roman Army-issue regulation sized stone blocks from Hadrian's wall. But these things have always happened, and I think I would rather see the houses than a taller, "honestly" preserved Roman Wall.

Just as an aside to that, the British Museum are running a special exhibition on Hadrian from July until October, this year.

He was a very interesting man and a fine Emporer. Spent a great deal of his reign travelling all across the Empire, but was a particular lover of all things Greek. His nickname was Graeculus - "little Greek".
