Here's another one for you. It's an 18th century figure of The Gamekeeper by John Cheere, a well known statuary maker. I had to repair him removing the old core and giving him a new armature and new Portland stone base. A guide to old lead statues is that they were invariably mounted on stone bases not, as more modern ones which tend to have an integral lead base.

Anyone else just want DJH's work all over their house? And a coat of arms, oh yes. I'd find it very hard choosing between chickens and kittens right now.

I would love to 'unretire' LadyArowana, in fact I never wanted to retire in the first place but I bought an old farmhouse and buildings and they took over I'm afraid! As it turned out it was a good move as I've been struck down with arthritis and a dickey ticker, although my friends said I never had a heart anyway. :!:
I meant to say in that posting that while repairing that lead figure I took care to maintain the centuries old patina on it. There are some restorers who insist on cleaning these figures with air blasted soft nut kernels (or something like that) and then recommending an annual coating of linseed oil or again something like that!
Some lead figures when they were newly made were painted lifelike but as this wore off the silvery grey finish of the lead was much admired against greenery. At the time lead statuary was preferred to marble statues brought back from The Grand Tour as the first winter frost cracked them and the solution was to cover them with straw and box them in and doing this meant they never saw their statues for nearly half the year. Am I going on again. :?: Sorry
Anyway, some more photos.....
I was often asked to replicate original work either to go on new wings or extensions or to replace what people considered were beyond repair things. My method of conserving old rainwater heads that had split or were showing their age was to get them back into shape as much as possible and then to make up a lead liner or box to fit neatly inside so that it couldn't be seen and made the head functional again. Simples...
I had to replicate these without the modern overflow spout....
From memory I think they were for Donnington Park :?:

The original one is in the middle. On the pallet to the left are some rectangular down pipes waiting for their collars. I once read in an old book that rectangular pipes were introduced in England so that if a pipe became blocked the damage caused by frozen water would be minimal. The expansion of ice can split a round pipe which would then necessitate having to take it down to repair it. The sides of a square or rectangular pipe will bulge out and can be easily dressed back into shape after the blockage has been cleared. .
The camera angle makes the old one look smaller than the new ones but here's proof that they aren't.

Oooh thankyou, it looks wonderful now, and it's so nice that you have all the before pictures too. When Joce wakes up she is going to be so excited to see decorative chickens and sheep over the kitchen fireplace and a beautiful pampered feline friend.

Here's where the rainwater head in the pic shown on 10th Nov ended up. I didn't fit it on the building so I can't be blamed for the top pipe not being dressed to profile.

This is where they were destined for. The plastic pipes and heads in the picture are temporary.
Later edit. Without giving away the location of these heads and pipes you might have noticed that it look's as though the masons have gone on strike in one of the pictures in the last post. The owner had a Victorian manor farm type building which resembled a vicars house and he sort of built backwards by building the ruins of an abbey and then adding to that a Georgian orangery wing. He then linked that to the original farmhouse by building a Norman/Medieval house which you can see in the picture above. In effect it looks as though the farmhouse was the last thing to be built instead of the first. Simples :?:
