it has crossed our minds and we did think long and hard about it.
we kind of concluded that it would be nice to have both.
when we buy this house we will be mortgage free so saving for a boat will hopefully be easier, providing we dont end up spending all our time and money on the restoration of the house. although i am pretty sure life will get in the way and we will probably end up having a ton of kids instead.

I have come to the conclusion, after reading some of the posts, that if you have to asked detailed questions about 'how to do something' in your period home, then you shouldn't be doing the job in the first place! Employ a proffessional, go on a course or three, read some books, wait a few years and after about ten you won't have to email a forum for extensive advice, you will know what to do. Stop trying to do 'renovation by numbers.' :|

I'm a bit puzzled by this comment following a constructive couple of emails with the original poster.
I ask questions here and on the green building forum in order to check, double and triple check what the professionals are saying. I've found a wide variety of opinions and only by asking detailed questions have I formed my own conclusions about what should be done and how.
I'd much sooner a home owner found out as much as possible before they started, in some circumstances detailed questions here have encouraged people to seek professional help on projects they were about to charge into without understanding the pitfalls.

If you have to ask detailed questions, of course you shouldn't be doing the work. It's always best to wait until you've received an answer and then start. The biggest threat to old buildings is from people who don't ask first.

I shan't be needing any of that £50 daub, having discovered this week, after several unsuccessful experiments, that the best match for the daub in our house is a bucket of sand out the garden mixed with some left-over clay from the art department. The bucket of cow carp has now been emptied on the potato patch.
