Questions, questions! Why do you have to ask?

I have come to the conclusion, after reading some of the posts, that if you have to asked detailed questions about 'how to do something' in your period home, then you shouldn't be doing the job in the first place! Employ a proffessional, go on a course or three, read some books, wait a few years and after about ten you won't have to email a forum for extensive advice, you will know what to do. Stop trying to do 'renovation by numbers.' :|

Ah, but the eternal human joy of learning...

I think also that very often the questions here are about finding whether it's a job for DIY or for calling out the expert - who tend to be rather sniffing when asked to come and quote for soemthing that they see as a DIY job.

They're obviously very good courses : half a day and you know all about "ridge to soleplate repair/restoration"
and it only takes one day to learn the skills involved in "wattle and daub repair & replacement".

A few more like that and none of us would need to visit the forum for advice.

Let's analyse some of these questions you find so offensive shall we? Here's a typical selection from Page 1.

How to approach the painting of a radiator
What wallpaper, or rug, to choose
How to identify and repair rot in wood
What heating system to choose
Whether to buy a particular house
How to make a French drain (from someone who has every right to be tackling such things)
How to clean a filthy bit of furniture.

Hardly rocket science, and hardly worthy of 10 years of study. Are they really illustrative of your point that we're all trying to do restoration by numbers?

Aa you have only posted once before over several years I suggest you read more carefully to get a true flavour of this forum.

I can only conclude that in the timber-framed idyll of her published, wattle n daubing life, she has no idea of the sense of isolation involved in finding yourself suddenly responsible for a period property in a new location, and the terror the overwhelming scale of the project can cause as a beginner.

If I hadn't been able to share problems on this forum I think I'd have gone mad (well, madder).

But maybe her books and courses are so brilliant they replace the need for friendship and support.

That may be true of some people but this forum gives much more than simple replies.
Often a question is asked that also, unwittingly, tells the forum that the questioner is unaware of alternatives or the correct method to deal with older property.
Many people believe that modern methods are better.
That is what they are told by most "experts" or professionals.
This forum knows different and is able to give a more appropriate method in keeping with the older construction.

Employing a professional is often the worst thing a inexperienced person can do because they are not in a position to judge if they are any good.
IME there are many professionals that are in it solely for the money and could not care less about doing a job properly.
Couple that reality with a general lack of understanding of different building methods throughout the building trades and 'renovation by numbers' is not so foolhardy.
Indeed far better than 'renovation by inapropriate methods' which the majority of builders are likely to supply... at your expense.

We all have something to offer on here wether it be decorating advice , Practical advice, or just a little bit of friendly banter to keep each other afloat when we feel frustrated or tired.
This is more than just a forum, this is a community, and during my short stay i have been made to feel welcome. Lambasting people for wanting to get their hand dirty and take pride in the renovation of their home and know they have contributed in some other way and not just financially is what we on here strive for.
Anyone can buy a period property and pay a developer to bring it up to spec and it will remain a property, It takes a special person to inject their love time and passion into making their house their life.. the main difference it becomes a home.

Try a tester pot from this lot - but I strongly advise, do it on an inconspicuous spot first:-

And mix with just 1 part elbow-grease.Given the soft nature of sandstone, you'll want more of a chemical strip than a manual one.

i did look at this yesterday but the online shop of the company doesn't appear to work and when i called them the phone just cut off... so don't know whats going on there...
I have looked at a similar system called peel away 7...
Has anyone used it?
