...rather porous and prone to visiting wildlife. My Australian buddy would find snakes in the kitchen on occasion, and I can do without that :shock:

But snakes are good! In the tropics, you need roof snakes to keep the rat population down!

Yes, snakes are good, and the boas or small non poisonous ones don't bother me, but there are cobras here, and I really wouldn't want to mess with one of those.... although kudos to my one friend that did and trapped the thing under a laundry basket while she waited for the pest control people to come and deal with it.

I was going to raise the stakes in that direction, but then some smart **se would bring on a mouse and it could get very embarassing. Incidentally the "Mythbusters" crew tested that urban legend and rated it "plausible"

The MythBusters hid a mouse under a ball of elephant dung, planning to flip the dung over and reveal the mouse when the elephants approach it. When they flipped the dung and revealed the mouse, the approaching elephant was startled and quickly moved away from the mouse. The MythBusters then flipped dung without the mouse under it, but the elephants did not react at all. They then retried their first experiment to confirm their results, and the elephant noticed the mouse and actively avoided it. Even though the elephants did not panic at the sight of the mouse, the fact that they acted cautiously around them was enough to have the myth be considered plausible, as it was not known whether the reaction was due to fear of or empathy for the mouse.

I prefer the empathy argument! Elephants are very careful! While they will happily stomp on anything in fear or anger, they can also be very gentle and avoid stepping on anything they don't want to hurt.

Me too! The boy ones are dangerous when they get frisky, and the girls with babies likewise, but no problem if you are sensible ( and don't hide the bananas behind your back ). The first domesticated one I saw walking down our street in Bangkok I was wildly excited and when I got home couldn't wait to tell our housekeeper, she looked at me somewhat bemused and said "yes madam lots of elephants in Thailand" :lol: I suppose the same as someone being excited to see a horse or a sheep, I felt a bit silly

He just gave us a withering look and said, "Yis - what a surprahse, eh? Babewns in Sahth Afreeca! Ah hope you dudn feed the bleddy thungs."

Oh I feel your pain. At least in some places they are nice, His Lordship took a picture of a rice planting machine in Japan and the farmer was thrilled, all smiley waving and happy. Their foreigner sport is giving us strange things to eat, usually involving tentacles.
