I'm not sure what type of hot metal machine you're talking about. The great majority of them - Linotype, Ludlow, Typograph, monotype etc. - used brass matrices.

In any event, I wasn't talking about wooden patterns - I was talking about hand-set wooden type, which preceded cold metal and hot metal.

You are quite correct, according to the strict rules of grammar. However, we creative writers (!) often break grammatical rules for reasons of rhythm, effect or impact, innit.

I see your point Gareth. Bodini is a nice font and the pictures you show illustrate my point about spacing between words. It just doesn't look right I think to have exaggerated spaces between words especially on a low level convex surface. I would go with a single space between each word and, adding up the number of letters including spaces (21) I'd then position the C in CRESCAT centrally over the door and set the letters out to left and right from there.

I'm sorry Doug but I like it! And to me, at 5ft0, that motto at 9ft is not a low level surface! Plus I think it looks Georgian to space them out, and there's a strong tradition of making signs wrap round buildings or pediments.

I never realised I was a bit of a shorty, I would often wear heels at work and then when I relocated to Asia people were generally smaller, so it was a surprise when the builder almost decapitated himself following me as I scooted through a room with one of those fold down loft ladders. Happens in planes too, I just fit underneath the overhead bins, a lot of people don't...........

Honestly so long as I can walk off the plane at my destination with all parts attached and all organs functioning then I am a happy bunny, nobody has ever tried to see if I would fit in the bins, a bit like dwarf tossing I suppose :lol: . Never had to endure this "Ryanair" though, from what I have read I probably wouldn't like it. I remember when we wanted to fly to Seville none of the non budget people went there direct non stop, so we went to Madrid instead, better than spending 2 days exhausted because the flights left at silly o'clock.

See! No one appreciates the suffering us lanky ones have to endure, the agony of flying with budget airline legroom, the fact that your (much shorter) other half NEVER puts the driver's car seat back after her so ensuring that you can't get in the car without comedy struggles to get the seat pushed back from outside the car (*) :evil: , not being able to walk around many old buildings without bashing your head, theatre seats designed for people at least 6" shorter than you are, public transport of any kind, etc etc.

(*) Don't worry Gents, I've got this one sussed. After many years of getting revenge by putting things on high shelves ( well, there's always space there for some reason and they're well within reach after all :twisted: ) I've bought a car with electrically adjustable seats, so her evil plans are defeated - just unlock the door with my key zapper and the seat glides back into a proper position. Who said the secret to a good marriage is compromise eh? :lol:

Actually Lady A there's nothing wrong with Ryanair. We just like to moan about them. Mrs DJH is flying back to the UK from Dublin to Bristol for €35 (about £27!) return. I can't drive her to the airport for that money so she uses her bus pass (shhh!) and goes free and I get to go nightclubbing for a week while she's away...
