Joce - I'm a bit surprised that this site can be blocked on your Netgear router's firewall at night. I'm not a great expert, but my limited experience of firewalls suggests that sites can be blocked or not blocked, but not timetabled like that. However I may be wrong.

Has he perhaps installed some child protection software, such as Net Nanny? What software firewall are you running?

Blocking sites by timetable is something that some routers will do.

My previous router was a Netgear. It had a large easily accessible set of controls (html-based, so you use them with your browser). The default access was with: user name > admin, password > password.

Nope. I would look for a manual online using the model number.
Alternatively:
start button->run->cmd

Look for Default Gateway
(however, it would probably take me half a day to explain what the above means and what to do with it once you have got it)

Penners, your house looks utterly delightful! Did you choose the colour? It's fab! I'd love to live in a pink house. I completely sympathise with inheriting cement, as you know; do you plan to say anything to prospective buyers? I wouldn't. Most ordinary folk seem to see cement as a positive asset anyway.

I'm also completely amazed by the scale of MdB's restoration of that beautiful property, what a wonderful thing to to do. How long have you been in the caravan?!

And Gareth, how typically enigmatic. Did you block up some windows so folk could see less of your Gothic goings on?

None, I'd be fussing over wanting a window above the door, that's all- but I'm sure I'll be corrected over this one.

But how about that one several houses down where they've put in a little tiny window above the door -what's going on there?

Right well I think that Gareth's house is the one with the blue door.

And I think the "window" is a date stone or terrace name plaque.

If I am right about which house is his then the plaque thing is on his wall or very close to his wall.

I wish it was a restoration... I don't think anybody here would call it a restoration. Rebuild would be a better term. The about 20% of the building which is old has been basically left untouched (though we did remove about 100mm and at least 8 layers of cement/plaster/tanking from the walls). The rest is 1970s and we have been very unapologetic about ripping a lot of it out mainly because of shoddy way it was built.

I also wouldn't say it was the most beautiful of houses, especially now and especially from the rear which suffers from a flat roof extension but we will be improving it and it is set in nice size bit of land in a beautiful village with beautiful neighbours. We wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

We were in the caravan for about 9 months which wasn't too bad. Somebody here (sorry, I can't remember who) was in a caravan for 11 years and brought up two kids in it if I remember correctly. That was a proper restoration.

The street-level Google images that Gareth posting had me searching for places I lived in London. I found the two flats I owned, and one I rented. A garden I planted is now mature and looks great. A piece of stonework that needed attention in 1986 still needs attention. I found where friends live, and saw that a junkyard I used to love has gone, which probably means the elderly friend who ran it has died. Checking old haunts, I could see so much change, even in the last ten years. I'm not sure all this nostalgia is good for me. I can't image how much work goes into Google maps, and how they manage to organize and collate all the images.

Back to topic: Please help me get into this Porsche...

A black page appears, with a little satellite map thing in the corner and a 'Go' arrow at the top. When I click the arrow a wonderfully clear picture appears, but only for an instant. Then it's back to the black screen. The little map thing has a sort of mannikin standing on an arrow and sometimes the picture reappears if I fiddle with that image, but again only for an instant.

Oh, it's not difficult. Just bleed a few oxen into a large bucket, knock up your lime mortar and mix well.

Actually the colour looks rather better on the photo than it does in life. I'm not terribly keen on it - at least I wasn't until I investigated the cost of repainting the whole house.

Mine doesn't look anything like your description, but if you want to try out Google Street View in general, open Google maps and enter your own postcode, then click Search Maps. Then click on the Satellite button, so you're looking at a bird's eye photo - zoom down if you want to. Above the zoom bar, you'll see a little yellow man - click on him (he'll pop out to meet you!) and hold your mouse button down, then drag him on to the satellite photo. You should see a little dotted circle underneath him - position this over any street that's outlined in blue, and release your mouse button. This will open up the Street View. Click on one of the arrows superimposed on the picture to travel back or forward, and if you want to rotate your view, look in the top left-hand corner. There's a circle with an N for north on it. Click and hold the N and use it to rotate the circle.

Have a peep through your front window and see what you're up to.

By the way, others may not be able to do this - Street View doesn't exist everywhere. It's mainly in major towns and cities.
