I can understand the sentiment but I think such a scheme would result in a drop of income for the BBC and would start a downward spiral leading to its demise.
Penners' previous post was a good summary of BBC excellence, generally acknowledged throughout the world, and for £3 per week. I understand, and share to some extent, the resistance to being forced to pay a television licence fee to fund the BBC, but when this mechanism is compared with the alternatives I think it stands up pretty well to such scrutiny. It's like the old 'democracy' debate - it might not be a good system but it's the best we have.
I watch little television these days but I don't begrudge my licence fee funding some of the best programming on the planet - especially as long as it continues to fund the unique and incomparable BBC Radio 4.
