I used to work for a retailer that had it's own barcode manager, who had been instrumental in their original setup years ago and who had helped set many of the standards used today. Hugely knowledgable, now retired and let's just say you wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with him. It is a monumentally dull topic.

That sounds like a real technological advance for me. I never have any idea what's in the fridge. Even when Mrs P says, "The fruit salad is on the middle shelf in a blue bowl," I can stand and stare into that cavern for ages and still not see it.

Are you sure? I thought it was a licence to watch any television channel and a method of funding the BBC.

Absolutely spot on Mr P.

It may be full of repeats and Trotsyist bias - but it is still without equal as a public service broadcaster anywhere in the world. It is one of our remaining icons that we really should put the British back into the name.

Like the House fo Lords and Monarchy, the BBC is something you'd never create these days, but we should cherish it for we will be impovershed without it.

On what basis do you think it's full of "Trotsyist bias"? I genuinely don't think the BBC has been "leaning to the left" for many years now. They seem to me to be treading the path of neutrality rather well in recent times.

There used to be a belief that as long as both the left and the right were accusing he BBC of bias then they were getting it more or less right.
IMHO the BBC has become a bit fond of whoever is currently in power. I often find myself shouting at the news when the "later today the government will announce..." statements are run hourly on 6music news with no balance or response from alternative views or some ministerial knee jerk is reported verbatim without any attempt at context.

I think the mild-left BBC bias is much less explicit. It is more endemic I think than deliberate.

And yes I know every government thinks the BBC is biased against them and every opposition thinks they cosy up to the government - especially when the Charter or licence fee are up for renewal.

Next time you see government policy or performance reported, keep a tally of how often it is done through the prism of "Labour criticise government announcement that...". It wasn't so much the case when Labour were in power. I was looking.

See how often reporters are asked for their opinion, rather than just state the facts and report the opinions of others. Even with senior correspondents I don't care what the opinion is of folk like Nick Robinson (not a lefty) - his role is to inform and educate, not pontificate. His blog is increasingly opinion-based.

Linking to the debate on licence fee, I'm losing count of the times I hear reports that the BBC have commissioned research into the impact of cuts, or some other social policy. I don't pay the licence fee for the BBC to commission research into policy impacts - that's quasi political work, and we have enough political parties, charities and think tanks to do it.

BBC news is there to report the news, not create it. That means reporting facts, interpretation and implications; not giving opinion or campaigning.

There's some truth in that.

If you're naturally inclined to the right (so to speak!) then not only do the majority of the opinions that you hear appear to be to the left from your perspective, but also you're more likely to give weight to those than the ones that you naturally agree with. The same argument applies if you are naturally inclined to the left.

I believe the BBC should become a subscription service and not one that we are forced to fund.

Convert the £145.50 it into a charge card

Break it down into hourly segments.

Every time we watch the BBC we are charged on that card.

Every time we watch a repeat we either are not or are charged a minimum flat rate.

At the end of the year if the BBC has shown too many repeats and you have money left on your card either a rebate or use it as credit for the next year's BBC license fee.

The sooner this charge to watch / listen to the BBC is changed the better.
