After too many such incidents while working on an old Land Rover, I switched to just using flap discs.

Might it not have been easier to switch to a vehicle that doesn't rust? :wink:

Some air tools are excellent. . . .
Similarly air impact wrenches are great for mechanical work at times, and just having a a blow nozzle to blast compressed air at things has been far more useful than I thought it would be.

I'd agree about an impact wrench - mine has removed rusted nuts and bolts from my tractor that nothing else would shift - and a blow nozzle is probably my most used air tool (a close run thing with my tyre inflator for my seemingly ever-leaking car tyres, but that's another story), but those would seem to be the exception in my experience.

I've wondered if a random orbit air sander would be good for sanding floors with. My thought was, have the compressor outside on a long air hose - away from the dust and to keep the noise away from me - and similarly I've got a wood chip extractor which could sit outside with a long vacuum hose to take the dust away. Mirka do an air sander - I've got their dustless Abranet hand sanding kit and it's excellent.

The wood chip extractor sucks high volumes of air - it would be pretty hopeless at filtering but if it's outside then it doesn't matter too much, it wouldn't really clog, it's just a ruddy great fan basically. I think a Henry sat inside would just clog up instantly.

Not as good as Toby's kit I'm sure, but his kind of equipment can only really be justified if like him it's for your profession.

Any thoughts? *If* it worked you'd get a relatively quiet, low dust way to sand floors.

those would seem to be the exception in my experience.

I'd recommend the needle scaler if you've got rust or paint removal from metal to do - Screwfix do a cheapo air hammer kit for £13, and Axminster sell a needle scaler attachment for £14.

Looking at Flyfisher's pic again...
Could you saw off the angled bit at the top that stops you turning it, drill a hole through the remaining bit, and use a "tommy bar" to rotate what's left?

WD40 left to soak in might help the unscrewing.

What keith said - lop the top off with an angle grinder then try and unscrew it
