Period log store?!

What would one of looked like? How was wood stored over the ages. I have built a very large log store 4.8mx1.2 depth. How do you all store your wood? If you need to use it at all.

We're fortunate that this house had a proper woodshed when we moved here. I load it up with a full winter's-worth of logs in the spring, so that they have the full summer to dry. The shed is a complete structure - walls, roof and door - but I never close the door in the summer, in order to encourage the circulation of air.

There's nothing more satisfying than the sight of a woodshed full up with neatly stacked logs, all ready for the worst that winter can throw at us!

Of course, it isn't really essential that a log store is a complete building. Many people have one that consists simply of a roof on legs - effective rain protection with maximum air circulation.

I was looking to buy too but for one of my size I would of been looking nigh on £1000. Instead I made my own for roughly £250. It does have a felt roof for now but after the winter I'm going to make a timber roof to sit over the current roof. A guy in Dorset or Devon makes very nice log stores but like I said 'trop cher mon ami'!

And penners yes it is very satisfying having a log store full, below is a pic of mine just after I made it and just before I filled it.

I'd like to make a comment about the wooden log store above and also in the link.
Looking at the structure I cannot see any diagonal struts or stays.
I would be concerned about collapse if circumstances were such that the weight of a log pile impinged on the side of the store.

Let me know if you find one.

Find one? You can "find one" in your local timber yard, or wherever there's a stock of old pallets. Then add a saw, screws, etc, and use your own skill and ingenuity to construct the store to your own design.

You'll pay over-the-odds for a kit!

Don't worry lime it's a tried and tested adapted design from previous log stores. No chance of twist it is solid.

Besides being beautiful and well constructed, it has the huge benefit that, if you should run our of logs during a really snap, you could burn the log store. :wink:

Yes, it's rather good I thought, but sadly I can only claim to have found the photo on the web. My own log store is a rather more 'agricultural' arrangement involving cut-down telegraph poles, assorted pallets and a lean-to roof. Functional though.

I really need to find a source of pallets to build myself a decent store - too mean to pay for new timber.

In the never-ending quest for dry firewood the logs are currently moving in an incremental fashion towards the wood burner
1. Chopped and stacked on exposed woodpile
2. Moved to otherwise redundant, but dry, outside loo (no door, no loo and roof made of ivy) - but it is listed!
2. From there to the inglenook, without a fire, at one end of the room
4. Then carted in the log basket to the other inglenook and next to wood burner
5. Finally into the fire...

Not exactly efficient but keeps me warm even without actually lighting the thing

Actually, you are quite corrrect as usual, but the nice men who buried the external cabling to the house let me keep the then redundant telegraph poles, though they were not redundant for very long.

Pallets burn very quickly and if you burn the Chinese pallets you don't know how they have been treated. Always burn clean wood. Your local tree surgeon is your best bet for wood if you can't source your own. I pay £90 for 2.5m cubed which is cheap. The usual price is roughly £65 per sq meter.

Running out of dry logs last year and starting on this years, meant this years are thin on the ground, so in order to try to ensure next years dry properly and are in abundance, I bought some logs. Just had 5 cubic metres for £150
That's about 2 weeks of wood if it's not too cold

5cubic metres in how long? Do you have an aga? We have two stoves, one in our bedroom and one in the living room. We use the living room stove every night and all weekend. It hasn't been cold yet so we have only used roughly 1.5m cubed since November. 5 seems a lot !
