Colour... it's not just the colour.
Will you be in there more during the winter or summer ... daylight or after dark... what curtains will you have... or blinds... the lighting will be clinical or warm... the walls will also be visible from outside.
Think you're right that you may end up repainting the walls
Or perhaps not paint them at all until you've been in there a good while.

It's a kitchen and not really a living area. It was intended to be an addition to the adjacent room, which is where we will be most of the time, in front of the inglenook and woodburner. This is why we have not fitted a door, preferring a wider opening to help integrate the two spaces.

Definitely no curtains and probably no blinds. Interesting point about wall colours being visible from outside, I had not thought of that as a consideration, though if we like the colours from the inside then I imagine we'd like them from the outside as well :wink: They won't be visible to anyone else. There are four circuits for lighting so can switch between or mix clinical lighting above the worktops with warmer lighting as necessary - I think the photo below is quite 'warm'.

If you aren't planning on hanging out in there then no reason to avoid the bold reds. You might choose reds with pans and kitchen gadgets and that would create a very warm welcoming theme.

My only issue would then be the white between the timber on the lovely old wall, white and plum aren't complementary colours. I would take that white to a warm dark cream that is similar to your kitchen units.

Colours from outside can be important - I've painted my shutters different colours and from the outside looking in this looks wrong and spoils the symmetry a bit. But in your case it shouldn't matter.

I presume you'll need to keep the colour of your "inside-outside" wall the same as your outside walls, otherwise that will look odd - which is a bit of a restriction on the colour for the new walls.

Do the sensible thing, defer the colour choice to SWMBO, you know who'll have the final say anyway! :wink:

Oh dear - you're exposing our lamentable lack of interior design skills. It wouldn't occur to me to colour-coordinate our kitchen utensils, nor Mrs FF I suspect.

Oh dear again. I tend to agree but, like Feltwell, I'm assuming this needs to stay white as the original would have been plain limewash and that's also the reason for painting the new sloping ceiling white. We could 'take the edge off' the new ceiling with a softer white but I'm not sure about the original wall.

Unfortunately, I think that would have been too costly. The existing rooflights nudged into the 5-figure zone, which was rather more than we were anticipating.

Red and white alone can be a bit harsh I agree, but throw in some other nice bright primary colours too and it will be lovely and vibrant, plently of mixer choices

Yes, apparently doesn't even help when a car is involved. His Lordship recently told me that he had always wanted to have his sporty car in racing green, but went for grey instead because it was easier to choose the upholstery. :roll:

I've only just caught up with this topic FF and, reading it through, I think what you've achieved is a balance between 21st century living tempered with the preservation of an existing structure. Well done.

I know you discounted fitting inset dormers over sky lights but did you consider using traditional pitch roof dormers with glass cheeks? These are not unusual and would have allowed more light in to the rooms in the ‘old house’ and would have matched the dormers on the front elevation. A lead roof covering on them would have looked nice and given me a reason for visiting…

Will the soil pipe, which you are replacing in cast iron, follow the same route as the pvc one? I'm sure it won’t but forgive me for asking. Period iron stacks have lead caulked joints made up firstly from a twist of tarred hemp followed by some lead wool tamped down on top of it followed by molten lead poured in on top to form the final seal. All good fun and requiring the use of a squirrel’s tail and some clay… There’s a picture of the caulking chisels required in the ‘Whatsits’ topic. Now where’s that damn squirrel?

We've just bought a new car Lady A in black...why aren't cars available in mud colour? Our boreen is swimming in mud and excess brown stuff ejected from the rear of local cows and the stupid little mud flaps pre=fitted are not as wide as the wheels so everything flicks up under the door cills... :twisted:

Thanks for your comments Doug. I've never heard of dormers with glass cheeks, though I understand what you mean. Even so, I think they would have looked a bit odd because they would have been quite low down in the new overall roof so wouldn't have been a good match for the front of the house anyway. 'Catslide' roofs (I think that's the correct term) are fairly common in these parts but I've not seen one broken up by dormers. Even the drawings we made with inverted dormers didn't really look 'right' and I'm now pleased that we went with the rooflights (even though dormers would have probably cost much less!).

You are right about the replacement cast iron pipe - it is vertical and we've rearranged the attached upstairs plumbing to suit. Our plumber talked about the jointing method you described but said they don't do that any more these days and they now use a modern mastic. HSE issues with handling molten lead perhaps? I wonder if it will be as long-lasting?

We had fun deciding on how to position the new pipe and the plumber had to keep checking his level and even resorted to a plumb line for reassurance at one stage, but it really is truly vertical. :lol:

I'd hazard a guess that the plumber couldn't be bothered to lead caulk the joints and maybe wasn't 'tooled up' for it!! I bet there was a tub of 'Plumbers Mait' somewhere around when the job was done. It's a non setting gunk used for making in basin wastes and the like and stays sticky on the surface attracting dust and is affected by temperature changes such as hot water.

The pipe looks fine...a lead one would have looked nicer...
