paint colours and the conservation officer

I've seen photos of both pink houses, and think them quite charming. I certainly wouldn't alter the colour.

I passed a house recently painted "Arsenic". Now that hurt the eyes.

Penners - I don't think of you as a Rock Chick especially if your pick bit is shiny!!! Joce the paint is only for the exterior woodwork not for the whole cottage but it should be nice sagey sort of green quite muted.

Suffolk Pink is about as traditional as black tar barns, I really think its conservation gone barmy.

I am resisting painting the external timber black, except where it would look strange not to. 3 out of 4 sides are natural colour and remaining so.

You should do whatever you want to do. It's your house.

Of course, if it's listed and if you plan to change the colour, it may be necessary for you to check your proposed new colour with the CO.

Pink limewash looks really nice, there is a house here with pink limewash and it looks very nice indeed, especially when it gets damp.

Can you not do a large test patch somewhere?

'Tis Suffolk pink now in parts, and the new lime will be Suffolk pink when it's all done. We like the colour - it looks traditional.

The timbers won't be painted, except at the front where most of them already were - it would look odd with some black and some unpainted.

Are the timbers oak? I am slowly changing all my outside wood such as barge boards etc to untreated Oak and it's starting to go all silvery now as it weathers, much nicer to the painted soft wood that was there before.

Edit - if you are ever passing through Walsham Le Willows take a drive down Palmer Street, there is a lovely pink limewashed cottage on the road side ,it might give you an idea of what your place might look like limewashed pink.

The bargeboards were white-painted softwood and will remain so, as will the windows and frames (we can't change them anyway - we did ask, and the CO refused). The sole plates and studs are oak, as they should be. They will be allowed to silver at the sides and the rear (and on the extension). The timber on the ends is almost all new (such was the rot) and the rear had been completely covered with concrete. The front is 60% original timbers which had been painted black, so we have little option but to paint the new ones black, too.

If you mean The Elms at Walsham le Willows, we know that one!

People were probably using the Oxen stuffing for Sunday roast, and Oxen tails for a nice bit of soup though so only scrupulous use of all parts of the animal, rather than killing the poor things just for pretty pink cottages.
