paint colours and the conservation officer

On receiving our planning permission and listed building consent there were a number of conditions. We have had a meeting with them and given samples etc. However, today I received an email back stating that the paint colour was acceptable but they would appreciate details of the RAL number for their records. Anyone know what this is and where I could find it?

It's a description of the colour. It might be on the tin somewhere or on the sample card. There are a number of different coding systems for colours. Pantone is another, more popular? one.

Try google Ral, Pantone, Hex colour codes and see what your get.

If it's not on the tin then just ask the paint supplier - they should be able to tell you. There are thousands of RAL codes - just imagine the biggest paint swatch set you've ever seen in your life, each one with a code on. That's basically all it is.

If they've not got RAL then a Pantone or BS reference should keep the CO happy.

Not wishing to stir up a hornets nest, but I was under the impression that the issue of whether a Local Authority could enforce LBC on painting a house was the subject of some debate..even more so the question of whether a specific colour can be enforced?

They aren't stating a specific colour on us - we chose the one we wanted and had to get written consent for the record.

RAL has been the standard colour system used in the building trade across Europe whereas Pantone originates in the American print industry.

There's something a bit odd about applying a 20th century descriptor to much older buildings and I'm pleased to see that Allbäck, the Swedish manufacturer of linseed oil paints sold in the UK by Holkham Paints, do not use RAL or any other number system so if you use good paint the Conservation Officer will have to be content with mere words.

Thanks for that Biff. I contacted dulux and they told me it doesnt have a RAL number. So he will have to be content with the colour. No unfortunately it isn't Pink its a very pale, sludgy sort of green water based paint for exterior wood. Much nicer that the horrid green gloss which is currently in situ.

Coz, do you mind my asking what type of dulux paint is it? What's it called? Not the colour, the type of paint. I'm trying to find something similar to how you described it. Thanks.

Hi Vicky - it is Dulux Weathershield exterior satin. The colour is Green Glade 3073. As far as i can make out it is a new colour so not everywhere seems to keep it in stock but it can be ordered.

'Invisible green' is best, a very dark green invented in the early 19th century, producing the illusion that glazing bars are thinner than they really are.

Pink only looks nice if it's limewashed, my house looks like a massive lump of chewing gum.

Our previous house in south Suffolk was painted with a well-known brand of exterior paint, over the top of concrete render. The colour was called (laughably) "Suffolk Pink".

It was revolting.

I also have a considerable area of pink on top. I'd never thought of myself as a rock chick.... :?
