There are various configurations that can be used for the border, the one we're using is copied from the brochure. I probably would have had two tiles of the same colour meet in the corner forming a rectangle of one colour. Mrs Wangle prefers it the way it is though.....

That looks really good. It's the sort of thing the majority of people wouldn't make the effort to do these days so is very special.

yes, the floor is gorgeous. I'm very envious. Some of our neighbours have similar hall floors, and I suspect ours was once like that, but it is now badly stained modern pine.

Can I ask which company / brochure you used, and whether they supplied the tilers, or if you had to find someone separately? And what makes you say it was not all plain sailing?

Wow - that's lovely. I wish our hallway was like that, we've got original tiles but they're just red and yellow laid in a diamond pattern, nothing fancy. I do love geometric patterns made with encaustic tiles.

I've always loved these sort of tiles and when I bought this house had my fingers crossed that I'd have one of those "finds" that I've read about a few times when I lifted the hall carpet. Alas,'twas not to be, all I found was floorboards! I thought the house deserved this sort of hall though so found a tile shop not too far away that could supply these "Original Style" tiles. They have quite an extensive catalogue online that shows quite a few different designs. We were going to use our usual tilers ( with some trepidation) but after talking to the sales assistant decided to use someone they recommended as they didn't advise using anyone who didn't have experience laying tiles of this sort. Firstly, the centre tiles were wrong and it took ages to get the right replacements and then near the end of the job they realised there wasn't enough tiles and had to order more which took more time and an extra 500 quid.
It was, of course, no one's fault.

After about 3 years we have carpet on the stairs and landings, it was finished today after they run out of carpet on Friday. It's taking a bit of getting used to but the house really does feel like a home at last.
Now attention turns to the outside and various holes that need filling and other jobs. I'm wondering whether to use scaffolding or a cherry picker. I'm sure scaffolding will cost a fortune and getting a big enough cherry picker to the right position will prove problematic.
Decisions, decisions.......
