My neighbour has a similar one that his dad put in in the 1920s.

Thanks for that, I guessed a bit later the 50's or thereabouts.
Today was interesting,whilst removing the concrete slab that had been laid, for some reason, over the kitchen floor we uncovered the original sandstone slabs, one of which was a trap door to a mysterious room in the cellar that has no other entrance and has a mysterious sooty substance within. It's just over 6ft deep and the floor space is about two M2. The walls seem to be covered in this substance and there are lumps of it on the floor. Does anyone have any clues as to what this room could have been used for?

What a fabulous project, and full marks for taking it on! There's a hell of a lot to do, but by the look of it a considerable amount of original fabric that can be saved. Please keep us up-to-date on progress!
I don't know who daubed the graffiti on the cellar wall but - vandals or not - anyone who liked the Beatles and Peter Frampton can't be all bad!

If the trap door was outside, I would have said that the mysterious room was the coal hole.

We already have a coal hole with a proper door on it, so that's not it. I got the floor space wrong earlier, it's slightly bigger than 2M x 2M and the only entrance is via the kitchen floor.
Fabulous house and what a great way to acquire it... that was one expensive pint of milk!
Have you found anything out about the original owners or other history of the house?
If you've got a local university with a geology department, you could always take a sample of the sooty stuff along and see if they will analyse it for you - mystery substances are always fun for mineral/gem boffins.

I've now lifted the flags and sand over this part of the floor and found a vaulted brick floor. Still no idea what this room was used for though.

Rads fitted, connected up and fired up today. A few little drips but not as bad as I was expecting. I was surprised at how quickly they heated up. It was surprisingly uplifting to have some proper warmth in rooms that have been cold for so long. Will be moving in in the not too distant future.

Been living here a couple of months now and are managing quite well considering there's still loads to do. We're not using the middle floor yet, the kids are sleeping in the spare rooms until their rooms are carpeted and curtained, which is in hand, but we're in our proper bedroom. Our ensuit isn't finished and there's still a main bathroom and the kitchen to do yet as well as a lounge and dining room and the stairs and hall....

That's sounds like fantastic progress! It has taken us six months to remove the grot and have hardly begun to improve.
